got to share this @bencollins.bsky.social banger with some colleagues today and am now sharing it here because he really did nail it
Posts by Andy Kirk
It is! And after a year Iâm still getting used to the absence of an amber light when driving off after a red.
I, Andy Kirk, have humorously updated a caption from a famous scene in Jaws to now read "You're gonna need a further home to store old data viz books". This is because RJ keeps buying old data viz books and he's starting to stress me out because I just don't know where he's going to put them all. I find it hard enough to store my books and I'm not scooping up copies of every book with a chart in it published at any time in human history.

Magnificent work
Posted earlier today, if you're involved in research and/or academia in data viz this is essential listening/viewing. Actually even if you're not it is so listen/watch is my firm recommendation.
This episode release marks the last 'conventional' episode in this season and in this series. I have one more special live episode to do, the details of which will be shared in due course.

Which dataviz events are you attending this year?
Final mention for this big collection of conference options for 2026.
NEW POST: I asked Obinna to compile a list of data viz and notable subject-adjacent conference events taking place in 2026 and he gathered so many it felt natural to publish as a post and share with the world!

Ok - so, weâve got a cartoon of a very long table full of people titled âEveryone at the Dinner Partyâ Each person has a little annotation and an arrow pointing to them, while they generally do the thing thatâs written about them - any extra visuals Iâll add in parentheses. Ok - letâs go! The Friend pretending to know about wine because they went to a wine tasting once. The Friend who IS going to show you a picture of their dog. (Standing, with a carton of beer over their head is) The Friend who thought this was a house party and arrived at midnight. The Friend who nobody really wanted to come but it would be weird if they werenât invited. (This person has two glasses of wine) The really shit fork that nobody wants (This is the only fork on the table with three prongs) The Friend who will tell you the best way to roast potatoes while eating your potatoes (This person is saying âBla Bla Bla Duck FatâŠâ) The Smokers who everyone pretends to be disgusted by but is secretly jealous of their ability to regularly extricate themselves. (The arrows here are pointing to two empty seats)
The Friend whose story is STILL inexplicably going. (Theyâre saying âAnd then, wait for this bitâŠ) The Friend who is only able to talk about that one tv show. (âYou havenât seen it?!â The Friend with a bit of a messiah complex. (This character is positioned in the middle of the table, a nod to The Last Supper of course - he is also the only one that has a water jug suspiciously full of wine in front of him) Second cheapest bottle of wine that everyone bought from the shop. The Friend who is quickly going to check their phone. The Friend who is going to spend the majority of the dinner complaining how âphones ruin dinnerâ. (This friend is staring at the phone checking friend) (Note: Thereâs a vase with three flowers in it on the table here - remember that) The rival âBest Potato Saladsâ that nobody was asked to bring. The new boyfriend who seemed ok at first but is now weirding everyone out. (âWant to hear more about how much better natural wine is?â)
The Friend who interrupts everyoneâs story with their own better version of the same story. The Friend googling everything to show everyone that⊠âAaaah, actuallyâŠâ. The Friend who was all like âOh my god, yes! Iâll absolutely be there. (Again, this arrow is pointing to an empty seat) The awkward bench seat two guests will stoically share. Person whoâs made it their one mission to befriend the disinterested cat. (This person is hovering over the cat) The Cat, who is absolutely furious about all this. (Note: At this point, the table ends and we continue through a door and into the kitchen) The Friend who is offering to do the dishes just so they can escape everyone at the table.
The two friends who wished theyâd thought of that (the washing up), so are now sharing the one-person drying job. (At the end of the kitchen bench, a solitary figure sits on the bench, helping themselves to a bottle of wine, they are of courseâŠ) The host, who might be regretting all this. (Note: we now move out through the back door and into the fire escape, the door here has been propped open by a flower pot missing three flowers thatâs been dragged into place. It is here that we find the two smokers, enjoying a cigarette in relaxed silence. The end.
âEveryone at the Dinner Partyâ
Very happy to say Iâve finally managed to format this so itâs actually legible here. So, jump on in and see if you can find yourself! Enjoy.
A reminder that if youâre looking for dataviz content on Bluesky, thereâs a lot here đđ

Well Iâm not on an Avanti train so you win that particular misery medal!
Hi Orian, hope you're well! Maybe its just me that was picked by the algorithm to be the sucker likely to be seeking opportunities :)
This is a very good piece of data storytelling:

So elegant. Kudos to the folks who made it.
Donât think Iâve seen this type of advertising before, sponsoring the âreal estateâ of a (presumably, desirable and lengthy) word within an article
