In just under two weeks!
Let’s rewind to the evening of Thursday 28th March 2024. Where the audience at Free Range went on quite the sonic adventure!
Screengrab of podcast artwork. It's available wherever you get your podcasts, folks.
The last episode of the Goodwin Sands Oral History project is up. This isn't your usual dull and worthy oral history ep - this is a hauntological radio feature doc about the sea and how it changes us. Broadcast from a wrecked ship in the Channel, it was recorded live in 2024.
Who will you present as part of YAH?
Free Range has worked closely with Smugglers to curate some of the artists. As well as this, we'll be curating some guerilla-style performance interventions over the course of the weekend. Dancers and musicians might crop up in unexpected places.

One of the things Free Range does is join the dots between people and organisations across East Kent, creating greater richness, strength and visibility for the cultural life of the region. That's what You Are Here is all about.
Why is Kent important to you?
East Kent has got so much going on culturally but there is no big city to join things up and provide a focus. This means that venues, scenes and artistic communities can develop in isolation.
Could you introduce yourself?
Hi, I'm Sam Bailey and I'm the artistic director of Free Range. Free Range presents free-entry adventurous music and combined arts events in Canterbury and we're the lead partner for the You Are Here festival 2026.

We're big friends and fans of Daylight Music. Please consider supporting them at what is a near impossible time to be promoting grassroots music.
THURSDAY 11/12/25: Piano in the Woods
In mid 2013 a piano was left outdoors in woodland near Canterbury, a community of audience members and artists grew around the project and by the end of the year over 50 different artists had interacted with the piano.

A line drawing of a map of the Goodwins off the Kent coast
For those of you unaware of the Goodwin Sands and how important they are, here's a quick explainer.
They are a pair of hidden sandbanks off the coast of Kent that are hugely important in terms of the sociocultural history of the area. A map:
