This is a mean thing to say but it seems like a lot of genre writers don't really know anything real. They don't know about Rome, or Angkor Wat, about riding a horse, or baking a pie, about Medieval liturgical music, or about the history of jazz. There's just nothing there. No building blocks.

A Mummer from Latvia, dressed as a macabre witch wearing light purple and emerald green rags and a bone-colored old woman mask, holding a long wood stick walking in the snow.
A strange creature with a large round burlap head, its teeth breaking through into a grin, wearing a brown full-body suit with a rope wrapped around its waist.

"If you are going to write fantasy - stop reading fantasy. You've already read too much. Read other things; westerns, history, anything that seems interesting, because if you only read and write fantasy, all you're going to do is recycle the same old stuff."
- Terry Pratchett (1948 - 2015)

A retro cgi render of a caldera lake from which rises alien spaceships trailing tentacles, on a hazy sunny day.
Doing some renders in between little refactors of my render pipeline. You'd almost think it was Bryce.
For once I cranked the supersampling and ray depth, still renders in a fraction of a second.
