Seems like Pie Face is like sex work — a thriving aspect of the economy that apparently nobody has ever interacted with.

Oooof. Are they at least consistent in that McDonalds way? Like, it’s not great but you know what you’re going to get at every outlet?

Yes! We’ve seen those on the road too!

I’m not up with my 4+20 news but I’m amazed everything is made in Bairnsdale. I’m not too proud to eat 4+20. Keeps you honest.

Let the wealthy use public goods for free, give them a stake in the quality of service provision, and simply tax them more than people on lower or no income.

Once you means test the provision of any social good you have created the instrument of its functional demise — the worthiness line. The worthiness line will be adjusted to the point that the service is used by so few as to be seen by the majority of society as anything but red on the ledger.

🎶 That was a discourse break 🎶

Another way to frame this is that "only the neediest should get this thing" is functionally indistinguishable from "only the wealthy *will* get this thing".

The dim-bulbs would means-test reticulated potable water if they were one day visited in the night by the Consistency Of Thought Fairy.

Any chance that her word salad is a bastardisation of the neologism “mock” (from mock-up)? It would fit. It would be stupid (because design is the rendering of intent) but it would make CEO-sense.

Private health insurance has allowed people like me the privilege of not being bothered about the state of, say, health care in the public system because I know I can leapfrog it and be seen toot fkn sweet whenever I stub my toe.

But I digress. Universality is good in and of itself.

A key factor in universality is to make expensive social goods available to people who might be able to otherwise afford to self fund. We saw (for a while) during COVID how opinions changed on the rate of income support when people outside the normal catchment pool suddenly needed it.

Imagine being the FBI Director and suing people instead of getting your lackeys to compile secret dossiers on your opponents’ sexual and other moral proclivities and then extorting them into toadydom. FFS America used to be a real country.

All of this stuff reminds me of the order of magnitude change in the cost of rail projects after networks were privatised. Government became so hollowed out that they no longer had the institutional knowledge to even know what a kilometer of railway used to cost.

Haha I was just about to hop into this conversation with exactly this point but thought better of it.
