I spoke with filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin about their new doc, @stealthisstory.bsky.social, which compels us to ask more out of mainstream media & has lots of great archival reels of Amy Goodman chasing powerful people with a microphone.

In the Triangle, PineCone and the Durham Symphony are both putting on concerts that contend with the American experiment and how we have, or haven’t, lived up to its ideals.
I was also asked what people can do to support local journalism. Stories by INDY and other local outlets get ripped off constantly by AI aggregators. One thing you can do is read original reporting, share it, and lift up why it matters for news to be produced by actual humans in our communities.
Two people told me they did not know you can contribute to the INDY because we are a free paper. Yes, we are committed to providing free, quality journalism, but it isn't free to produce. If you're in a position to do so, contributions help ensure we can continue that mission 🫶

essential reading, essential reporting by Lena @writingthings.bsky.social
Champ, who turns 3 in April, is rarely fazed by the variety of things Michael asks him to retrieve, a list that includes bats, bumpers, balls, and even eggs. “Michael could throw a potato out there,” said Melissa, “and Champ will go get it.”

obsessed with this horrifying, evocative landfill dispatch very @ccourtneybohl.bsky.social: “All the while, flocks of migratory birds whirl overhead, noshing on trash. Depending on the season you can spot rock pigeons, eagles, Canada geese, starlings, and turkey vultures.”
“You know,” Smart said, standing in his South Durham kitchen with a cup of coffee, “Star Trek is the world we want, and Star Wars is the world we have.”
Rep. Valerie Foushee and challenger Nida Allam are working to win over 130,000 Wake voters added to the district since their 2022 matchup.
“It really opens your mind,” she said. “Seeing is believing. There’s nothing like seeing that giant mountain of trash—that you know you helped make—to make you want to do better.”
That statue was erected and dedicated by some of the same people who killed Wyatt Outlaw—but few in the county knew that, until they started digging deeper.
"I think the best images are complicated. You can look at these images and try to imagine who they are, and maybe not really get there. They’re just like a moment in time."
Through no fault of their own, more than 70,000 North Carolinians could hit an extra obstacle when trying to cast a ballot in this year’s primaries.
The snow and ice may have finally melted, but for local restaurants across the Triangle, recent storms are anything but over.
"More than he loved the Heels, though, my dad hated Duke. Coach K—his stiff authoritarian approach, his joyless discipline—represented everything wrong with basketball."
In interviews with the INDY over the last month, seven Democratic candidates running in the March 3 primary diagnosed some of Wake County’s biggest challenges.
“Anybody Lynn ever met immediately realized what a bright shining star she was,” said her Tres Chicas bandmate Lamm. “Not like a rock or movie star, but a brilliant light of kindness, happiness, and depth."
As book coverage takes another devastating hit, I’m reminded how lucky we are to have Sarah and @indyweek.bsky.social championing stories that matter. Grateful for Sarah's care and vision and speed with this excerpt!
Hope everyone clicks and reads and shares.
✨Also, please pitch! Local books, visual arts, performing arts, music, and more - email in bio. There’s not much culture coverage still standing. Help us build ours.
Banging the same gong as everyone else about the need to support independent media & locally owned publications, but: For the love of god, please support us!!
If not the @indyweek.bsky.social, support wherever you get your news from. Being owned only by the powerful does not work.
My wife and I have been talking about the larger implications of the @foushee.house.gov and @nidaallam.bsky.social primary race. This article does a great job presenting all the nuances that will become important for how Democrats navigate midterms in a MAGA world.
As we close out my first year as INDY’s editor in chief, I want to say thank you for reading and supporting local, independent news. I'm so proud of this team and the work they’ve done.
Now, we’re looking toward 2026.
hark! local songs we loved in 2025 (a list that only scratches the surface). 💕 @indyweek.bsky.social
Newly-elected Durham City Council members are being sworn in at tonight’s meeting. As part of the ceremony, the mayor will select a new mayor pro tem, and a new seating arrangement for the dais.
Here’s my guess as to who goes where.
CM - City Manager.
CA - City Attorney.
