Do ordinary Republicans and Democrats really avoid each other in everyday life? In a new working paper with Delia Baldassarri, we present descriptive and experimental evidence to challenge the view that partisanship drives the formation of social relationships.

➡️ Emotional involvement in politics isn’t just a by-product of being informed. It’s about feeling invested and feeling confident.
For civic education, this means that building interest & confidence matters, while at the same time confidence without knowledge risks misdirected anger.
Using 3 waves of the ANES + pre-registered experimental studies in 🇳🇱 & 🇺🇸 we show that:
❌ Knowledge is weakly or inconsistently related to emotions
✅ Interest strongly predicts all emotions
✅ Confidence-in-knowledge strongly predicts anger
Lowering confidence experimentally reduces anger
Past work suggests that political sophisticates, those who are interested and know more about politics, are more emotionally engaged. But recent work on misinformation and overconfidence raises doubts.
👉 We ask: Which component of “political sophistication” actually drives emotional engagement?
🎉 New paper out in Political Behavior (with @gijsschumacher.bsky.social & @mrooduijn.bsky.social)
Why do some people feel stronger emotions about politics than others?
💡Not political knowledge, but interest and confidence-in-knowledge drive emotional engagement.

With my project IMMERSE I investigate whether immersive narrative interventions (storytelling, live theatre, video games and virtual reality) can strengthen support for liberal democracy by engaging people more deeply than conventional communication. See: www.uva.nl/en/content/n... 2/2

New publication, out in Political Analysis:
There is an increasing array of tools to measure facets of morality in political language. But while they ostensibly measure the same concept, do they actually?
I and @fhopp.bsky.social set out to see what happens.
Congrats!🎉
Now in an issue @psrm.bsky.social: I show that the 🇩🇰 Social Democrats could have won policy support for a pro-immigrant platform if their messaging were framed in moral terms. Findings provide a central corrective to the popular notion that the Social Democrats were destined to go anti-immigrant 👇🏻
