Discovering Prince, Ten Years Later - Anil Dash A blog about making culture. Since 1999.

Tomorrow marks 10 years since Prince passed. For the first time, I gathered nearly two decadesq of my writing, podcasts, talks & more into one curated resource, including playlists, rarities, a review of every video he ever made, and collaborations I did with his estate. anildash.com/2026/04/20/p...

Is chaining Bezos to a mountain and having an eagle gnaw on his liver part of the deal?

To the MCU fanboys who were screaming in my replies back when I said it was a bad idea for a superhero series to assign homework:

What’s good? You doing okay? Do you want some cocoa?

To put it another way…

If your Mega Blockbuster Sequel requires your audience to read several omnibuses (or your previous film to have a required-viewing bonus scene tacked onto it), maybe what you’re putting out isn’t the sequel you’ve been promising.

Because they have decades of lore, comic book arcs/plots allow for far more retcons and crossovers than the -universe format can handle.

The MCU has gotten away with what it has by keeping the character-count manageable and mostly lore agnostic.

In other words…

Doomsday is going to be a mess.📽️

a page from Anne Carson’s “Autobiography of Red” that ends with the sentence “what is the difference between a volcano and a guinea pig is not a description why is it like it is is a description”

Even Ayn Rand thought President Hoover was a bad idea! (Because he was!)

“But the TVA never turned a profit!”

The mandate of the TVA was simple. Provide reliable electric power to the Tennessee Valley, at the lowest possible rate. Along the way, the TVA provided job training, employment, built libraries, mitigated malaria, fought typhoid, provided smallpox vaccines…

The New Deal brought power to the American South, gave my grandfather a job with the CCC (which is how he met my grandmother), and established the TVA where my mom worked until she retired, but please, do tell me how terrible FDR was.

The mind reels at just what kind of private atrocities Karp and Thiel are trying to get ahead of here with this abominable misappropriation of grace.

wafting up gently from the street below our window, a loud car horn and then, in reply, in the most beautiful classic new york accent I’ve heard in the wild in years, “you fuckin stoopid, bro?” live from new york, it’s saturday night!

A sterling reminder that over the last nine decades every white boy blues musician who has attempted “Cross Road Blues” didn’t understand the assignment.

Not only is this a horribly ineffective means of protest (as a pocket square is meant to be, you know, folded into a pocket), but did it have to be plain white like a flag of surrender, too?

Oh.
A pocket square.
This is brave. So so brave.

A ★★★½ review of Mother Mary (2026) There was a moment about an hour into Mother Mary where it seemed like this might end up being a rather elaborately staged dialogue between Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, a tense conversation with l...

Mother Mary (2026) is ambitious without saying anything, is fantastic without leaving Earth, wants so badly to be Phantom Thread and The Red Shoes and My Dinner with Andre without really committing to any of those and takes place in the same universe as Tàr and I can’t wait to watch it again.📽️
