Moments before the first shot is fired, this federal agent can be seen retreating with a gun. It appears to match the general appearance of the firearm posted by DHS, including the red dot sight. This agent’s back is turned when the first shot occurs. x.com/BillMelugin_...

I've thought many times in the last 7 years that it's likely that the most impactful thing I will have done in my academic career was the work to organize the Tufts PhD student union.
But we, as organizers talked about extra protections for international PhD students, I never imagined this.
Pittsburgh is a union town! #solidarity✊
BREAKING: Police have been called on current and former Starbucks workers in Pittsburgh. This store went on strike, with workers demanding the company finalize fair contracts - and now some are being arrested.
Shame on Starbucks for letting it get to this point.

Social movement scholarship is clear that both activist organizations (founded as explicitly political) and everyday organizations (eg NGOs, sports & recreational clubs, neighborhood committees) can all be useful for promoting collective action.
Also, Ed Blazina isn't on here yet, except when I share his stories for the @pghguild.com strike paper, but if you see him in real life, congratulate him for earning the journalism award of the American Society of Civil Engineers Pittsburgh: www.unionprogress.com/2025/02/02/p...
Reporting live from Downtown this morning, the @pghguild.com strike paper's Ed Blazina has two stories on Pittsburgh Regional Transit. The agency has a severe financial shortfall. And a transit advocacy group takes issue with much of its proposed bus route redesign. www.unionprogress.com
Here's @publicsource.org coverage of yesterday's Pittsburgh City Planning Commission meeting on inclusionary zoning — all 11 HOURS of testimony and public comment.

As our strike against the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette enters a third holiday season, we’re raising money to keep our strikers and their families supported.
Can you make a donation to show that the community has their backs as they continue to hold the line against the millionaire Block family?

Great news from Pitt, where graduate workers voted to unionize with @steelworkers.bsky.social in a landslide! More than 97% supported forming a union to negotiate better pay, benefits, and working conditions. Another big step forward for workers in higher ed.
BREAKING! University of Pittsburgh grad students just voted to unionize with United Steelworkers, following the Staff doing the same in September and Faculty also doing the same two years ago. Pitt is now fully a union shop 💪 and I will this one time only allow myself to unironically say Hail 2 Pitt
i joined the committee just after that loss, it was high covid and prospects looked bleak. I'm so proud we could take lessons learned and put up these numbers ✊️✊️✊️
when we fight, we win!

intro post! I'm a sociology PhD candidate at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, researching how grassroots movements for labor and climate justice shape urban development by working with local public transit advocates.
I also double as a union organizer in higher ed
looking forward to connecting with folks!
We are the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, representing the striking journalists at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and the full-time faculty at Point Park University.
The Coalition of Graduate Employees at Oregon State, AFT Local 6069, is on strike! OSU is bargaining in bad faith. Teachers can't teach if they can't buy groceries. Researchers can't research if they can't make rent.

Right-wing elites are more palatable because they promote the myth of meritocracy--that anyone can be elite if they work hard enough and if government gets out of their way.
This is a myth, but it gives people a sense of agency, and it appeals to those who feel government has burned them before.
