My typical day for the past few weeks:
-look for job postings with proficiency in Japanese as a requirement
-only find Chinese and Korean ones
-think “might wanna get back to learning those at some point”
-spend the rest of the day learning Hebrew, Irish and Tibetan

Phrases like “Embassy X presents its compliments to Ministry Y and has the honor to state the following” might not feel particularly foreign to English or Russian speakers, but the specific construction “have the honor to do smth” really sticks out in Japanese & doesn’t seem to be used anywhere else
Unfortunately I don’t know of such studies, but as a former embassy employee I was struck by how much of diplomatic correspondence in all languages seems to consist of phrases calqued from French. I worked with correspondence in English, Russian & Japanese & it’s especially noticeable in the latter.
tfw a new show actually impresses you with its in medias res, minimal exposition beginning, but then you find out that you just accidentally started from episode 2😕
once had a conversation with a Danish guy who talked about having visited the Danish American community in Elk Horn, but because of how he was pronouncing it for a good chunk of the conversation I thought that the name of the town was “Alkoholen”
Me after the first couple of weeks of going through a Biblical Hebrew textbook: “wait so Gamaliel translates to ‘God is my camel’?”
Yes I did my best not to imply that I agree with it. ISIS-K is just more on my radar since I used to live in Moscow & am in Central Asia now. Even then I’ve heard this more from western campist types than from locals (don’t think anyone who wasn’t paid actually believed the “blame Ukraine” story).
Can’t recall hearing it much during ISIS’s heyday, but have definitely heard it a bunch in relation to ISIS-K in particular in recent years, usually framed as something like “gee, isn’t it funny how they only go after whoever is NOT geopolitically aligned with the US/Israel?”
this knocked me out
Lost in translation: How Russia’s new elite hit squad was compromised by an idiotic lapse in tradecraft
@christogrozev.bsky.social, @dobrokhotov.bsky.social and @michaeldweiss.bsky.social detail how hubris and Google Translate exposed Russia's most secretive assassination unit, Center 795.
More importantly, an amazing person who shaped a humane philosophy that the studio carried from its founding until now, and in the hands of his family, into the future. People who crossed paths with him remember both small acts of kindness and his ahead-of-their-time views on animation production
All my condolences about the passing of KyoAni founder & president Hideaki Hatta. No exaggeration to say that he's been one of the most important individuals in the history of this industry, especially if you consider that he also had a hand in IG's inception www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/information/...
Tsurumaki will celebrate the 30th anniversary of these words he said by directing a new Eva series

Scrolled up at the right time.

gatchaman crowds insight, one of the few stories that fully commits and refuses to avert its gaze from the horror of the Median Voter
this is a good thread; something I would add (and which Gillis has talked about elsewhere) is the degree to which the movement left *still* has not really adjusted to the reality of The Internet As It Now Exists and its wide-scale, cascading ramifications both for organizing and opsec.
Highly, highly important, inflexible Japanese->English translation rule dealing with any game-themed text:
ステータス: Stat(s)
状態: Status
The top is numerical attributes; the bottom is whether a party-member is poisoned or asleep
The top is literally "status" in katakana, but that's a trap

Is this from Dzongkha or Ladakhi? Since the plosive + r combination usually produces a retroflex consonant (affricate in Lhasa Tibetan, stop in Dzongkha) I take it this was loaned via an Indo-Aryan language.
Oshi no Ko has always been harsh on the entertainment industry, but there's a fundamental difference between its usual critique (which *can* be pointed) and allowing a brilliant woman to direct an opening that's explicitly about aspects like the commodification of young, predominantly female bodies
It wasn’t until I first came across “paraula” that I made the connection between “palabra” and “parole”. And I’m pretty sure I didn’t connect the dots to “parabola” until it was pointed out to me directly.

Person who is learning japanese: I now have renounced the English language.... I will check out every single work in japanese to enlighten myself on the true meaning of the work
Person who speaks japanese fluently +10yrs: imma read it in English I'm too lazy for this
Never have I been more glad that no project gets picked up at KyoAni unless a director is proactive about wanting to make it. Which, duh, they would with Ruridragon. Jump adaptations are sucking the air out of the room, but at least this is a vacuum-sealed studio that won't sap talent from elsewhere
Real announcement ends up being understandable but insanely out of left field. Well played, PR person
Screenshot of a livestream, it shows the 3D Amane Kanata in a stage waving goodbye while holding a mic with another hand and smiling with her eyes closed. In the background the stage has blue lights like stars
I was strong until she started to cry trough while singing 🥲 Goodbye Kanata, thank you! #天音かなた卒業ライブ
