This one is like an extreme face-off between inoffensive don't-rock-the-boat apolitical roots rock band and avant-garde in-your-face political electronic pop band. Very little common ground. Easy listening versus difficult listening. Learned from interview meaning of "snippa" in Swedish. Go Knife.

Very cool.

Great-sounding tape, 1st gen. SBD. Some memorable banter: "ever been to a bad neighborhood, a WPOD neighborhood?" (WPOD = White Punks on Dope), + extended improv on blood - "spread the blood". 1h 11m.

Respect and gratitude to @nanette.bsky.social and @onetrueposter.bsky.social for writing such thought-provoking words about Blink-182 and their 2001 album. I read it all. I probably enjoyed reading about it more than listening to it but that was not your fault.

Peak maiden? Good sound quality, great set of songs, some sing-alongs, funny banter (yuppie sightings, stuffed animals thrown on stage). 'Keep Yourself Alive' riff emerges at end of Sanctuary. 1h 48m.

It's not necessarily a problem but if there was a choice between covering 15 years with 128 albums each year or 30 years with 64 each year, I'd prefer the latter because the diversity across years is probably more interesting than within each year.
I wonder whether reducing the total number might be worth considering. For instance 64 instead of 128 would also be a good number of albums to listen to with a fair amount of diversity, and lower rank differences. There would still be some uneven matches but less extreme (1 vs 64, not 1 vs 128).
If there was a limit of say 10 albums then future tournaments could be more focussed with less very uneven matches and more years could be covered. That said, I appreciate a big part of this is about discovering new music and listening to stuff you otherwise wouldn't.
This is interesting, thanks for sharing. 199 people submitted nominations and some nominated lots of albums - over 80 in one case. That implies that some people nominated albums that weren't even close to their best album of the year. If many people do this some albums get in that no-one likes much.
Interesting but not the only one - 'Jay-Z had previously dissed Nas in his song "Takeover", taken from his September 2001 release, The Blueprint.[5] On Stillmatic, Nas retaliated with the anticipated song, "Ether"' Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillma...

Great tape with some pointed banter, e.g. "I was informed a couple of days ago that we are no longer a punk rock band" & "we are not a punk band, Tim told me and I believe him". 1h 51m.

Interesting album with several nice surprises, diverse sounds and an impressive dynamic range versus pleasant but boring album. Voted for Microphones - curious name for solo artist! Notice how Glow Pt. 2 has metal interludes like some metal albums have acoustic interludes. Foghorns, not silence.
Both links are the 2002 version of the album, the 2001 version didn't include the title track.
Uh-oh, my version is only 66m 19s.
* it's actually 'Asleep in the Back', my mistake.
That's right. I learned today that Ian MacKaye shares a birthday with Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil, who is 9 years older.

About the Elbow album that will be in tomorrow's match, the version released in 2001 did not include the title track 'Asleep at the Back'. This was added to later versions (2002+) after it was released as a single and became a hit.

Ah no, tomorrow I will be supporting the overdog! I was looking at the list and there don't seem to be that many matches that would be good upsets.
C'mon all you rebels and bracket anarchists, we haven't had a proper upset for weeks.
Here's an interesting review of Go Forth that joins the dots between this and the other Les Savy Fav releases.

Hadn't heard either of these before yesterday. Pulp album alright but patchy. Found myself wanting to listen to Go Forth again - and again. Fun fact: LSV planned a series of 9 singles on 9 different labels, designing the cover art at the start, and completing the project over 9 years. Vote LSV!

Excellent recording of an exciting performance from the Fly on the Wall tour. Electrifying. Extended version of Let there be Rock (13m). 1h 49m, including about 9 minutes of ambient noise at the end.

Release show for Winter Wheat. Lovely recording. 21 songs: 8 from Winter Wheat, 2 from Provincial, 10 Weakerthans songs, 1 cover ('Don't Be Denied' by Neil Young). 1h 18m.

A great-sounding recording of a performance including 8/11 songs from 'Global a Go-Go' (2001), 2 from Rock Art and the X-Ray Style (1999), 3 Clash songs, and 8 covers. 1h 41m.

Nice recording despite several announcements between songs saying it was broadcast on CBC Radio 2. With then unreleased 'Our Retired Explorer'. Switched tracks 1 and 2. 53m 24s.
