In Texas, early primaries leave time for runoff elections - they're required when no candidate gets at least 50% of the vote (and happen more often than not).
The fact that it *also* suppresses turnout is just a convenient bonus for the state GOP.

Frankly, we already don't have enough skilled staff (doctors/nurses/allied health) to support our population. Closing rural hospitals *would* be pretty efficient way to mitigate the worst outcomes of the staffing shortage.
