When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it.
Anyway: fund basic research.

Fun fact: Women's sports are segregated not to protect women, but to protect *men* from losing *to* a woman.
Don't believe me? Look up Jackie Mitchell. Struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Then suddenly women were unfit to play baseball.
Dr. Cerina Fairfax is remembered as a mentor and community leader as officials call attention to the broader impact of domestic gun violence toward Black women
NEW: Porsha Ngumezi and Nevaeh Crain died during miscarriages in Texas after doctors delayed treatment.
The state’s medical board has ruled that substandard care led to the deaths, but the doctors were given minimal punishment.

Lord Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, said, "There is something demonic" about American politics today. He described Pete Hegseth's rhetorical games as "diabolical."
So, there's that.
A worker died at an Amazon warehouse in Oregon last week.
For more than an hour, workers were instructed to continue working as the man lay dead.
One worker wanted to help, but a manager told them to “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work," according to @thewesternedge.bsky.social.
This woman is a handpicked Trump supporter from Arkansas and she is less anti-trans than the median Atlantic columnist
Literally the only bit of that show I've watched is of their dalliance
It is indeed adorable and also hilarious
11 p.m. "Interview With a Vampire" (1994) Tom Cruise is a soulless recluse who lurks in the darkness and sucks the life from all who come near him. He's also in this movie about a vampire. Showtime.
good morning
People will be closely studying how Hungary's opposition pulled off their win in such a pro-incumbent system. Important to note that the theme was corruption. Democrats need to get much better at calling out Trump's corruption.
To any Hungarians annoyed that Americans are placing the credit for your momentous victory on the shoulders of our stunningly repellent little weasel of a VP: you are correct to feel that way, I'm sorry, we just want to seize any available oppurtunity to humiliate him specificially
love, LOVE the very well dressed middle aged couple standing in the street, graciously waving to passing youths, drinking white wine straight from the bottle
A very gross way to drag your wife into your basically admitted cheating and alleged predation
The phrase "As Victor Orban's landslide defeat in Hungary shows..." will appear in dozens of thinkpieces in the coming months.
I'm not sure he really had an effect at all but it is very *funny* that he keeps making the rounds for absolute loser causes.
Watching BBC vox pop interviews in Budapest and literally every opposition voter celebrating has framed it neither for Magyar nor against Orban but as a pro-European vote. “I’m for Europe.” A few anti-Putin / pro-Ukraine but I watched like 12 in a row say “we voted to show we’re part of Europe.”

MacKenzie Scott seems happy
Okay?! She does indeed
If I divorced Jeff Bezos I'd probably be happy too 🤣
94% of votes counted, with a clear 2/3 majority for Magyar's Tisza projected.
And not to spoil the mood, but the new parliament will be composed solely of right- to far-right parties. Next to the right-wing Tisza and far-right Fidesz, extreme-right Mi Hazánk also seems to have won 7 seats. #Hungary
No one in Hungary is under any illusions about winning candidate and conservative right Magyar’s politics, but intelligently said they’d vote for a goat if they were running against Orban.
Please, remember this in our next opportunity to avert disaster! Yes, I want super progressives too. But

I truly know nothing about the guy who won but Orbán losing feels like an enormous win
Thrilled
🤣
Can never get over how tawdry the modern Right's view of Western Civilization is; nothing to build, nothing to aspire to, nothing even really to destroy or wage war against, just sullen resentment of their own children and seething hatred of the cities whose economics subsidies their regimes.
Péter Magyar victory speech:
"We want to make a country where no one is persecuted because they think differently or because someone loves in a different way to others."
He may not have campaigned as a liberal. But this is a huge change of direction and rhetoric from Orbán’s anti-LGBTQ+ crusade.
But also...*is* she happy?
I'll take my lifestyle honestly. I know how to be satisfied with what I have.
1981/4/18 [Walden College Reunion] Alum 1: ...and then last year I finally got fed up. I quit the school board and started a local chapter of the Moral Majority! / Alum 2: The Moral Majority? You mean the folks who say God wants a bigger defense budget? Alum 1: It’s true. The Bible supports US Military Supremacy. / Alum 2: Gee, I’m not so sure I go along with you on that one. But, hey, to each his own, right? That’s what this country’s all about! / Alum 2: Well, great seeing you again, buddy.. Alum 1: May you burn in Hell for all eternity.
From my "could this joke please age a single day" folder.
I think we're in a similar moment where we need to reckon with the fact that a lot of regular (largely white but not exclusively) Americans do not believe in democracy, if they can even articulate what democratic society/government means
