Having come from semester systems it is hilarious to me that we had to get an email reminding ppl to teach the full 10 weeks of our quarter.

Somehow I ended up in a place that closes restaurants, grocery meat counters, medical practices, and pharmacies due to lack of staffing and it makes life so much harder
Further reflection has me thinking about why we encourage students to cite rather than how professional citations work - though I understand that in a perfect world these are linked I think they often are not
Same.
Citation is valuable to let a reader find the original source (with research or data, complete coherent ideas, other related work, etc) and give credit — with AI generated content, original sources are all boiled down, I guess, and not even recoverable.
Can't do anything with that citation.
Looking for critical/STS/media studies work on the "data lake." Anyone? 😬
WHAAAT?!

New essay is up (no paywall), "The Afterlife of a Prompt": ko-fi.com/post/The-Aft...
How everyday prompts, typed in passing, become part of the linguistic infrastructure behind modern AI. What feels fleeting to us becomes formative for genAI models.
Boosts and shares appreciated!
Me and Jacque Wernimont smiling at one of my students who was was amused that we were walking and being filmed.
Your friendly neighborhood digital humanists appear in a promotional video for the initiative that got us hired. Listen, if it gives me the opportunity to work with @wernimont.bsky.social, I'll gladly smile for the camera. vimeo.com/1139014443?f...
I did not have Lil’ Jon on a Toys r Us float on my bingo card, but I’m not mad

Just cited Blodgett and Tala’s Nature piece on covert racism in LLMs so not surprised but also
“ChatGPT, as it scales…becomes increasingly anti-black.”
Mine all bloomed last week!
Do folks have recommendations for good feminist STS discussions of biostatistics or stats in healthcare? I’m craving a good background to these applied methods while I’m taking MPH courses
This essay talks about a major turning point in my approach to digital humanities, which has directly shaped what I've been doing for the last 5 years. I can show it to you soon once we finish dealing with some UI issues and do a little bit more data cleaning. But really, it freed me.
Dartmouth’s Carly Bobak and Courtney Schiebout’s “reflective villainy” “We are encouraging researchers to systematically adopt a malicious mindset to uncover potential harm” in data science and AI

Such an inspiring @dh2025lisbon.bsky.social #dh2025 closing keynote by @roopikarisam.bsky.social about care and repair!
Whew…that’s a hard travel sell. Lovely places but aside from Ireland, this is rough from this zip code while kids are home. Sigh
Thank you, @roopikarisam.bsky.social, for your closing words for #DH2025: 'the future of DH requires access grounded in accountability; repair sustained by care; scholarship driven by solidarity'
And also, 'hope and strategy are very important things to hold onto right now'
RR: Repair must be our ethic, care our method. #DH2025.

Professor @wernimont.bsky.social reflects on the overreliance of data from wearable technology, via the @nytimes.com. “They’re like, ‘The device said …’ or ‘The monitor said …,’ and I’m like, ‘But what did your body say?’”
