One recurring question is why transphobia became so popular in the UK, and I’m becoming more sympathetic to the idea that it’s a displacement of the lost imperialist impulse—that the tendency to dominate others by establishing hierarchies & taxonomies of their bodies is core to the British culture.

eager to try these, and suspect they could become really significant as theatre connects to global tourist flows. But I question the article's implication that audiences are so averse to supertitles - it's just that English can't function as a default lingua franca in Asia.
I guess they might be most likely to succeed in places where, as you write, there isn't *one* lingua franca. But for a Broadway run or, e.g., English surtitles in Berlin, I'm not sure theatres are going to go with much more expensive glasses over surtitles
oh wow, I'd love to try these too! Though it really seems to me that it's about two technologies: 1. can glasses win over traditional surtitles and 2. can automatic cueing and perhaps even automatic translation win over doing it manually?
