The Apple II is basically like a PC, it only has a beeper by default. To get more sound you had to use a sound card.
Even if they were quite rare in the early 1980's, the best known Apple II sound card was the "Mockingboard", which used two AY-3-8910/8913. Modern versions use the compatible YM2149.

Digidream is a music demo released in 2020 for Apple IIe and IIc with the 1983 Mockingboard sound card.
It replays an Atari ST tune by Jess/OVR featuring a digital drum sound, using two interrupts and almost 100% CPU time.

It shows effects that rely on 6502 code running in sync with the CRT electron beam to change video modes during every scan line.
