Our paper (@chadmbaum.bsky.social @sovacool.bsky.social @liviafritz.bsky.social) examines how Australians respond to novel carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies.

Happy to announce I have joined the Editorial Board at Energy Research and Social Science! ππ‘
#ERSS has long been one of my favorite journals, and I thank @sovacool.bsky.social et al. for the opportunity.
I look forward to seeing your best articles soon π

There are many types of CDR, only some of which have strong energy couplings. The article is useful that way.
Really helpful and easy-to-read introduction to #CDR from @heatmap.news @emilypont.bsky.social

Happy to have had the opportunity to take a larger view of our research to date on public perceptions of #SRM for the #GENIE project.
Thanks to @srm360.bsky.social for the invitation!
π New Perspective from @chadmbaum.bsky.social & #GENIE Project researchers:
Global surveys show #SolarGeoengineering support may be higher than assumed β especially in the Global South.
β
57% back small trials
β 12% reject SRM outright

To stop climate change, we need Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) & emissions cuts. But CDR is just getting started & data gaps are holding it back. The #StateOfCDR offers accessible evidence-based insights to help decision-makers track progress.
Explore the data. Follow the evidence.

Happy to have been invited to share some thoughts here drawing on our research on public perceptions from the #GENIE and #ELEVATE projects (w/ @sovacool.bsky.social @liviafritz.bsky.social)
The UK Parliament is debating a petition to ban geoengineering.
Experts welcome scrutiny β but warn the conversation lacks nuance.

Big welcome (at last) to @sovacool.bsky.social here on Bluesky!
For those that have dipped their toe into the issue of the emissions and environmental impact of generative AI, or gone full-on winter-bathing style..
This is an absolutely essential read, dispelling some pernicious myths and underscoring how this risks to be a distraction for the climate movement.
FYI - I am not one of the authors, and I fully recognize the issues of taking key points out of context. I am grateful for Annie's fleshing out the point (though that quote was definitely not front and center).
In any case, I have seen a similar summary to the above in various media sources.
Majority of African citizens (i) have not heard of climate change and (ii) place main responsibility for climate action on own governments or ordinary citizens-not historical emitters.

π : Participation in public consultations on #carbondioxideremoval #CDR remains skewed towards the Global North, for-profit sector & actors from the farming sector, with positions divided between expansive (mostly for-profit actors) & restrictive (mostly NGOs), find @lucillalosi.bsky.social et al.β¬οΈ
πPublic consultations on CDR attract mostly for profit actors from the GlobalNorth, disagreeing with NGOs about its regulation.

The idea of planting trees to sequester carbon is so popular that it makes people feel more negative towards a range of other techniques for carbon removal. Such a bias could hamper development of a socially-robust portfolio of carbon removal options.

Carbon removal beyond the trees
Our new paper in Communications Earth & Environment on how the popularity of tree planting is harming other approaches to carbon removal rdcu.be/ef97T
Yes, I remember it... this is not to say though that (re)planting of trees does not have a role, particularly when done properly, e.g. multi-species, endemic.
But it does seem to skew discussions with the public when it comes to CDR.

Our comment "Carbon removal beyond the trees" out in @commsearth.bsky.social
We examine unintended outcomes of the popularity (among publics) of planting trees to sequester carbon π³
Notably how such a bias could hamper development of a broad, socially-robust #CDR portfolio
