Half of college students say professors should be mentors Over half of students believe their professors are at least somewhat responsible for being a mentor to them. Faculty weigh in on the feasibility of this effort.

Yes, faculty should be mentoring. But it takes time it takes to mentor well, plus there’s a the lack of professional development (in doctoral programs) and lack of recognition for mentoring. Without training, all you know is how you were mentored, toxic or not.
