The problem in automotive is that the numbers to the customer get very high very quickly. “Eh it’s only a 3% efficiency gain” well that’s over $1000 on a $33k car.

The enduring lesson for much of the auto industry from the financial crisis is that you really do need to keep your powder dry when it comes to layoffs when times are tough. Things were shitty for years afterwards.
