OW’s with an actual publisher now that actually cares about it, and I’m really grateful for that. If you’re a young creative that signs a contract with any company, please always be wary. It’s so easy to just go with something because it seems like the only opportunity you have. It’s not, I promise!

Anyway…when I posted OW on Webtoons Canvas and got 1000% more views/follows/comments than I ever got on HW, I realized the problem wasn’t me. The problem was I just wasted 3 years of my life with a bogus company lol.

I ended up having to get professional help for my mental health. I still can’t believe I even finished chapter 2 because the burn out was so real. I always felt bad for ending the webcomic without saying much, but there was… a lot going on.

I asked for new notes, but was handed off to another editor because Isa was now too busy for my comic. The new editor had very off-topic notes and clearly didn’t read the comic. I was so stressed out that I started to hate the work I was making. I was depressed. I knew I had to stop.

Eventually I realized they just didn’t care about every comic they had, but also that my comic MUST be bad. At the end, I ended up having a meeting with my “editors” who basically said “eh it’s not that bad but we can fix it”. Like what?? You’ve been editing my comic this whole time!

HW had both digital and physical exclusivity to my work, which was wild considering they did nothing for me. My ads barely ever ran. I spend hours refreshing to see if they were, asked HW for confirmation, and was told they were definitely running. I’m sure that was a lie.

I’ll talk a little about my own experiences, since I was always too afraid to say much back then. I wasn’t a big artist, and since HW hadn’t yet formed a discord, I felt like I was the only one having problems with them. I ended up internalizing that it was my fault, that I just sucked.

I was only with Hiveworks for 2-3 years, but I always felt it was inevitable it would reach this point. I left before it got this bad, but it was still Very Bad even back in 2016. I wish all the artists luck and success.

It is really really discouraging rn with all the book bans (especially in TN) but I still have hope that today’s kids will ultimately know better and do better for the world.

It’s just sad that some adults are trying so hard to prevent that.

Book world sucks sometimes (got a homophobic review on my book’s Amazon page recently yay), but then I get emails from kids who say my book helped them and it’s their favorite thing, and I’m reminded that I don’t care about bigoted adults actually 🤷‍♀️
