It’s something I’m noticing a lack of in my experiences and I don’t understand why capitalism? When there’s mass reciprocity couldn’t that override the lumpen vernacular of capitalism?
Academia and the art world need a giant overhaul in the way those worlds operate.
It feels tremendously nourishing to share my 26 yrs of weaving knowledge and build community, and make some income to stay above water. I’m disappointed yet again by the art world and implore galleries and supporters to DO BETTER by their artists. Reciprocity, mutual respect and care. Next comment⬇️
It’s v hard to do both at once. The art market currently a dumpster fire and last yr my gallery said “you need to get a job, we aren’t going to sell anymore of your art this year”. So I applied to approx 1000 jobs and nothing happened. I started my own weaving school as a result (see next comment)
These days I’m working in the studio during the week, and teaching workshops on the weekends. It’s quite a balancing act. I see now why artists who teach in the university give themselves over to the job and their practice takes a step back. More in comments…
My favorite artist of all time, Neko Case has written memoir that I finished today and it was as heart wrenching and beautiful as you’d expect. It’s titled The Harder I Fight The More I Love you. It ripped my heart open and I can’t recommend it more, especially if you love Neko’s music.
Prepping a new wall piece. My biggest to date at 7ft x 10ft.
Also still confused how this app works.
Not sure a new platform is the answer but I’ll give it a try. Hi!
