To defend the concept of civilisation – that would no doubt have spoken to Sontag. There’s a photograph of her taken by her partner, the celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, who had accompanied her to Sarajevo. It shows Sontag amid the rubble of Vijećnica, the City Hall and National Library, which was bombed in August 1992. She crouches on a rock, shoulders forward, one wrist grasped in her other hand, a guarded posture. Her face is framed by her black hair, with its trademark flash of white. An oversized shirt is thrown on over a polo neck – clothing for getting work done.
