It will never not make me sad how unknown jiri trnka is. literally my favorite puppeteer ever. if there were any justice in the world he'd be held up on a pedestal as high as aardman or laika

Too long for full alt text, the gist is that genre fans have "a limited frame of reference" to genre work. Fans try to link things in Babylon 5 to Lord of the Rings, but JMS was thinking about Orpheus. Or more broadly, that genre works have broad and deep inspirations, in ancient, classical, and medieval stories, themselves that genre fans are ignorant of.

I've quoted this post by JMS (Babylon 5, Sense8, etc) for years now. It's long, and he's talking about genre fans here, but genre fans of the 1990s are now genre writers. www.midwinter.com/lurk/guide/0...

"NORCO finds the sublime at the heart of the perverse. It seems to suggest that setting your sanity adrift is the only way to float." Very enjoyable article by @groan.bsky.social!
