i feel more and more that the uncertainty, the instability of the present is so crushing that people see it as unattractive. most modern day settings nowadays feel the urge to at least tack on sci-fi technologies or magic to reach this state of escapism that we can't go without, unlike in the past.
i feel the push for futuristic and sci-fi settings and the disregard for contemporary settings is two-fold
1. art, and rightfully so, wants to be more and more intemporal, doesn't want to "age badly"
2. the present is bleek and people turn more and more to utopias
