The sequel to “Who he play for?”: “What he play on?”

You ever notice how media members say “Adam” to refer to the current commissioner, meanwhile his predecessor is always either “David Stern” or just “Stern” on its own?

I don’t think that’s a mistake.

I really want to hear from the FO guys who were wrong. Like Cleveland had to have somebody think Darko > LeBron right? I want that anecdote.

In both vibes and largest population of fans using BSky, this is very much a Sixers site.

I don’t get it we all know Wemby’s winning. It’s not like Scottie gets a contract bump for coming top 3.

Or maybe it’s like the Oscar’s and it’s an honor just to be nominated.

The thing I go back to is that Sacks, Thiel and Musk are all products of Apartheid and the class that benefitted from it.

They’re used to having their own set of rules, that’s default. It isn’t typical rich v poor it’s something innate since birth, something anathema to traditional American values.

I don’t doubt that.

I think they could use some veteran leadership, shooting, and a guy who knows how to succeed in a big market. The answer is clear:

But I’d argue it’s also bc the nba sits at this weird intersection where it’s not as national as the nfl and not as local as the mlb. Pair that with an overlong season and you end up with a sport where we aren’t seeing the same games.

I think we treat the NBA as more of a prestige tv show than a sport. We talk about league wide storylines (MVP, Finals favs, tanking, etc) more than individual games.

Part of this is bc there’s a lot of people that are just into the pods and the highlights rather than the full games.

It’s the og XFL problem. Too WWE for the sports crowd, too sports for the wwe crowd.

And so you end up with what are basically actors selling a scripted show to an audience that doesn’t care.

Meanwhile, it’s too basic for the hardcore wwe fan who already knows the stories and the lore.

Not a Curry-type shooting ace. Not a Rose/Westbrook super athlete. He has a very deliberate game that is very, very lethal.

Hard to think of comps = hard to contrive narratives = hard for hacky radio hosts to blow off work.

All good points. Ig I’m just wary about the academy being too influenced by the public/govt actors.

This is why the federal poverty line is such a worthless measure. Nobody wants to put it at an accurate level because then whoever’s in office gets blamed for increasing the # of people in poverty

Basically, it’s not the job of an academic or an economist to reassure your worldview, their job is to study.

And so we try to put moral markers on this or that measure (gdp, median income, trade gap, etc) to understand the economy instead of just seeing them as they are.

The charts reflect reality but don’t explain it.

massive inflation with the “building blocks” of life (college, healthcare, HOUSING) that we all need.

At the same time, stuff like flights and TVs are (generally) going down. PCs are high now bc of ai but we had 80s pcs sell for $1000 BACK THEN

I’ve never been a beat writer but it’s harder for them to get 1 on 1 with a player to speak authentically without someone from pr muddying the message.

The media and the league are partners. There’s a reason the nfl gives tons of access. There’s a reason boxers love giving interviews. It’s selling

The media changed. Less access, less local coverage, and a lack of connection. We see these guys more than ever, but it’s less authentic.

And downstream from that the media talks down the product and bc we more than ever experience the league through pods and tweets vs games, we get worse vibes.
