Namesake: Reflections on a Warrior Woman by N. S. Nuseibeh
A really interesting and beautifully written collection of essays, which won this year’s Jhalak Prize.
Simultaneously personal and intellectual, the author reflects on identity by comparing her modern Palestinian self with her ancestor who fought alongside the Prophet Muhammad.
Moving.

Huge congratulations to the brilliant NS Nuseibeh, whose book Namesake has been longlisted for the #JhalakPrize25!
Interweaving personal reflections on Palestinian identity, secular Islam and feminism, with tales of the author’s warrior ancestor Nusayba, it’s a vital read in difficult times.
Jhalak Prize longlists are out too:

Sorry let me be clear: what I mean is it's time for @societyofauthors.bsky.social to revise its silencing of its members and FINALLY make a statement against the genocide in Palestine & in support of Palestinian writers. Here's today's report from Amnesty for evidence.

It’s #ReadPalestineWeek, folks. I’ve just started this, a new reissue of Edward Said’s seminal The Question of Palestine via @fitzcarraldoeds.bsky.social. As Edward’s daughter Najla recently told @amkdurie.bsky.social in a LitHub i/view, readers on Palestine ought to go back to the source material👇

My latest book review for @middleeasteye on British-Palestinian author NS Nuseibeh and early Islam Nusayba, woman warrior and companion of the prophet.
Palestinianness, Muslimhood, Arab feminism, and chosen ancestries.

A sign hanging in Point Reyes Books that reads: If you are thinking of turning this book over, or covering it up with another book, or hiding it somewhere in the bookstore because you don’t agree with its title or political implications, please ask yourself: has anyone who has attempted to suppress the exchange of ideas ever been on the right side of history? Would I possibly benefit from engaging with this text instead of hiding it when no one is watching? Feel free to disagree with the books, but do so on your social media feeds, not in our bookstore.
There's been a rash in people objecting to books about Palestine in our bookstore, so I put up a sign.
The image contains a block of text which reads: there’s laundry to do and a genocide to stop there’s laundry to do and a genocide to stop. I have to eat better and also avoid a plague. my rent went up $150. I’ll need to pick up more shifts. Twenty people died in Rafah this morning and every major news outlet is stretching the limits of passive voice to suggest whole families may have leaped up through the air at missiles that otherwise had the right of way. I just got a notification that my student loan payments are starting up again and my phone isn’t charged. My cousin got COVID for a fourth time and can no longer work or walk or even feed himself. The person across from me on the L train seems to fashion themself a punk rock revolutionary, but they’re not wearing a face mask, and that’s the kind of cognitive dissonance that makes me want to steal batteries. Fascists keep winning primaries for both parties, and I think I gained a few pounds. (cont in comments)
This one feels like a punch in the chest:

My debut NAMESAKE is published today, but how can I celebrate a book about being Palestinian in the midst of a genocide against my people? Instead, I offer my preface, written in late October, just before the book went to print.

This gorgeous essay by @therakha.bsky.social has articulated so much of what I've been struggling with.
