I wrote up something that's been in my head for a while: psychometric methods alone can't tell us what cognitive tasks and their indicators measure.
Correlating indicators across tasks is circular when constructs are defined by those same correlations.

Theory matters in psychological science — but where does theory in psychology currently stand?
We’re inviting psychological researchers for our survey to share their views on the state of theory.

Two traditions in action control research - BRAC and procedural WM - often talk past each other.
This latest review from members of our lab and colleagues from the BRAC community connects them conceptually and computationally, showing how procedural WM can reproduce key BRAC effects.
Big news from the lab today: @joschadutli.bsky.social has officially defended his PhD! 🎉
We’re grateful to @aidanhorner.bsky.social for serving as external examiner and as Joscha’s supervisors we @leabartsch.bsky.social and @koberauer.bsky.social are incredibly proud—congrats, Joscha!
It was great having you @aidanhorner.bsky.social ! Thank you for serving as the external examiner on the defense committee of my (former!!) phd student @joschadutli.bsky.social !
Big congrats to Dr. Dutli!!
... materials (verbal vs. visual), memory type (items vs. bindings), and test format (recognition vs. recall). Set size influenced LTM only when two conditions were met: (1) the WM task involved item recognition with concrete objects or words, and (2) LTM was tested for items not probed in WM. [3/3]
Across 3 experiments (15 independent replications) we found evidence challenging the gateway hypothesis. Set size reliably modulated WM performance, but this rarely translated into corresponding differences in delayed memory. WM set size was varied from 2 to 8 or 10 items, & we manipulated...[2/3]
Is WM a gateway to LTM? In this registered report we find that higher WM load rarely impairs LTM encoding - suggesting WM capacity is not a bottleneck for forming LTM traces. @as-souza.bsky.social @edamizrak.bsky.social @cognition-zurich.bsky.social psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-... [1/3]

PS is excited to announce the launch of "Individual Differences in Cognition” (IDIC), an open-access journal on research in cognitive psychology, science, and neuroscience. Co-Editors-in-Chief are Andrew R.A. Conway & Michael J. Kane. Manuscripts accepted this spring. More information coming soon!
In our new paper in Psychology and Aging,
@koberauer.bsky.social, @leabartsch.bsky.social, and I investigated age differences in the Hebb repetition effect, and show that chunk formation is largely preserved in old age. Check it out here:

The Cognition Lab @ University of Zurich is on Bluesky! Follow us for updates on new papers & preprints, conferences that lab members attend & other news around research on #workingmemory, #attention, and #longtermmemory.
The final part of my PhD work is now published in JEP:LMC 🤩 Special thanks to my wonderful PhD supervisors @evievergauwe.bsky.social and @nlangerock.bsky.social 🤗 psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...
I am pleased to share that "the bird study" is now accepted at Psychology and Aging! A great collaboration with visiting intern Kishen Senziani, @leabartsch.bsky.social & @edamizrak.bsky.social 😀 Check out the pre-print below and a short thread on the study design and main takeaways 🧵👇
Hey #memory folks, check out this new preprint by @joschadutli.bsky.social , @koberauer.bsky.social, and @leabartsch.bsky.social showing that elaboration benefits are likely driven by aiding in establishing efficient retrieval cues.
😎Check out this new paper by my brilliant phd student Ana Rodriguez!
Together with @philippmusfeld.bsky.social we investigated how prior knowledge contributes to a serial recall #workingmemory task!
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Position (80%) at the Cognitive Psychology Unit, Department of Psychology, University of Zurich. The ideal start date would be January 1st, 2026 but could be somewhat earlier or later. The position is for initially 3 years, with possible renewal for another 1.5 years. The successful applicant will work with the head of the Cognitive Psychology Unit, Prof. Dr. Klaus Oberauer, and the Cognitive Psychology team. The post involves research and teaching (one course per semester). Research at the Zurich Cognitive Psychology Unit focuses on capacity limits of cognition, in particular working memory, long-term memory, and attention, which we investigate with experimental, individual-differences and aging studies and computational modeling. For further information see: https://www.psychology.uzh.ch/en/areas/nec/allgpsy.html We offer: - An attractive research environment with close collaboration within the team - Excellent lab infrastructure - Salary according to Cantonal regulations We expect: - a PhD in psychology or a related discipline - experience with experimental research - excellent method knowledge and skills - very good command of English - interest in pursuing an academic career in cognitive psychology In addition, it would be desirable if you had: - experience with publishing in international journals - programming skills - experience with mathematical / computational modeling Please send applications including your CV and motivation letter no later than September 10, 2025 electronically as a single PDF to: Michaela Oestmann, michaela.oestmann@psychologie.uzh.ch For questions about the position please contact Klaus Oberauer, k.oberauer@psychologie.uzh.ch
🚨 PostDoc Opening 🚨 The lab of Klaus Oberauer is looking for a new postdoc, starting end of this/beginning next year. Research focus is #cognition, #workingmemory, #methods and #computationalmodeling or anything in that direction. I cannot highlight ENOUGH how great it is to work in this lab 🥰🤓

“The gender-equality paradox entails that countries with more equality have larger gender differences in behavior. Positive associations between equality & gender differences disappear or reverse when accounting for cultural clusters of countries. The paradox appears to be a methodological artifact”
New Preprint with @edamizrak.bsky.social! Performance in immediate memory tasks reflects a flexible mixture of contributions of #workingmemory and LTM. Distraction disrupts WM, while PI impairs retrieval from LTM; when both are in play, performance depends on the relative reliability of each system
