@j2bryson.bsky.social we published the interview with Ana
Stoica is a Research Group Leader in the Social Foundations of Computation Department at the @maxplanckcampus.bsky.social for Intelligent Systems in TΓΌbingen, and presented her work at the latest Brown Bag event at the Hertie School.
Every time you scroll through social media, search for a job, or click on a news story, an algorithm is making choices on your behalf. Most of us barely notice.
Ana-Andreea Stoica's research career is built around scrutinising exactly those invisible decisions β and asking whether they are fair.
His talk pulled back the curtain on how governments are quietly using machine learning to police their welfare systems β and how a small team of journalists managed to prove that one of those systems was deeply, measurably biased.
Justin-Casimir Braun is data journalist at @lighthousereports.com & PhD candidate at @stanforduniversity.bsky.social. Braun spoke at the Inside Data Journalism talk series, hosted at the Data Science Lab and organised by Professor Simon Munzert @simonsaysnothin.bsky.social.
A single immigrant mom applies for welfare. Seconds later, an algorithm flags her as βhigh riskβ, without her knowing.
Justin-Casimir Braun reveals how governments use ML to police welfare β and how journalists exposed bias.
