Started playing this a bit again, and I think we need more of this dude in games. There's enemies who try to steal your stuff in other games, but this guy in particular runs off and comes right back and starts shooting at you, because according to the manual he bartered your stuff off for bullets.
Pragmata's approach to keeping the plot relatively bare and putting all its eggs on Hugh and Diana's dynamic and how said dynamic evolves alongside the player skill, which in turn frames the mechanics of a video game as a tool to supplement character development kicks SO much ass.

I think maybe Ninja Gaiden reboots, especially 2, had the right idea. As Mark pointed out, their combat sorta flows outwards from the block state which also applies to movement - you move by doing a timed tap input, so it's impossible NOT to see it as a tactical choice
IMO the core challenge of designing melee action games is the tension between atk states & movement.Commitment is always risky while movement is usually free. Reducing attack commitment removes tactics from combat tho. So instead I think its better to attack movement to make it similarly situational
