In Memoriam: Bennetta Jules-Rosette (1948–2025). AfAA mourns the loss of a pioneering scholar of African religious movements and expressive culture. Read the obituary by her longtime friend and collaborator, J.R. Osborn, on our website.
Our theorization of Unauthorized Identity Craft directs attention to these important but often neglected aspects and helps explain the (unpredictable) consequences and transformative effects of such practices.
This collaboration began with a shared dissatisfaction with unreflexive uses of “fraud” in migration research - not only because it is a state-centred category, but because it limits our understanding of migrants’ agency, creativity, relational labour, and moral dilemmas.
Out now: my new article with Jaeeun Kim in International Migration Review. We propose and theorize Unauthorized Identity Craft as a better alternative to “fraud” in migration studies. doi.org/10.1177/0197...

So grateful to Apostolos for his thoughtful (and critical!) engagement with my book. My response will be published soon.
My engagement with @ulrikebialas.bsky.social ' s must-read book on the experiences of young asylum seekers claiming protection as minors in Germany - a daring and sensitive ethnography that offers unique insights into the consequences of age classifications and their often unexpected outcomes.
RIP Thomas Hylland Eriksen. Today, the world feels like a smaller place without you. A brilliant mind, a model of an engaged anthropologist, and, most of all, a genuinely kind and caring person. You will be deeply missed.
