one of many things I am not happy about re Platner is that his campaign is by default normalizing the idea that criticizing Nazi iconography is bad faith.

like, people being upset he had a nazi tattoo is not an op. nazi tattoos are bad.

No country routinely abuses the memory of the Holocaust more than Israel. No other country has used the murder of six million Jews to silence opposition to an ongoing genocide. Obscene, immoral, deranged. It genuinely sickens me

Genuinely depressing to me that your partner has to Doordash to raise money for your cancer treatment when you get old. What happens if you don't have a partner? Are we just working to pay a landlord and save up for a medical emergency when we're elderly?

How are any of us just functioning in a time like this? Are we even really?

“Two can play at that game” is literally the Drebin quote here when he takes an innocent woman hostage to cluelessly fight the enemy

FYI, Star Trek was never subtle about its politics. Having Black, Russian, and Asian crew members treated with respect was a political choice for a show in the 1960s.

You're just mad the needle has moved beyond the issues of your day.

When all this is over, I'll keep coming back to the fact that the US both 1) un-sanctioned Iranian oil and 2) blocked Iranian oil exports within a 30-day period as the best encapsulation of the strategic incoherence of this whole war.

Maybe I’ll write about the Affordability Discourse one day but I think that one thing (among many both material and perceptual) that this hard to untangle is that everyone—including those who are doing fine in material terms—has a lot more visibility into how well the rich are doing than in the past

Making Israel pay for its defence would drastically change the power dynamics in the region. It's a lot more difficult to be the psychotic bully in the region if you don't get your weapons for free.

Objectively a victory for the pro-Palestinian bloc that J-Street has gone from being the center-left rearguard against any and all substantive criticism of Israel to relenting on one of the most perverse elements of the US-Israel relationship, which is unlimited, unconditional, free military aid.

Jesus is a literal prophet in Islam, practising muslims hold him in pretty high regard. It's when you ask people in the West who make Christianity their personality about Islam that the disrespect flows

The degradation of society:
1. Celebrating the k!lling of a CEO
2. Cheering on warehouse arsons
3. Making heroes out of people who attempt political violence
You can be outraged at the system and still not glorify violence. These aren't wins. This is a society losing its moral compass.
[Coming from a liberal btw]

I don’t know how people keep forgetting that workers rights were entirely written in blood and the capital class had to be threatened with violence before they agreed to things like 8 hour working days and 2 day weekends.

it feels quite bad that it's basically impossible to argue that much of the modern right in the west has become both entirely intellectually shallow and deeply, fundamentally morally corrupt without sounding like a tedious teenage tankie, because it is.....the factual truth

F-ing depraved. The IDF edited a photo of the journalist they assassinated and made it look like he was wearing a Hezbollah uniform. They explicitly state that it is legal in Israel to murder journalists. The entire Israeli state is a criminal enterprise.

Once I went to the pediatrician and they were playing The Princess Bride in the waiting room, which isn’t a big deal normally, but it was the dungeon torture scene and I had no other context, so just sat there bewildered and disturbed watching Wesley moan in pain lol

The trouble with betting on the support of Christian evangelicals is that their faith tradition around The Rapture (at least the one requiring Jews in the Holy Land) only really got mainstream in living memory, and there was really no reason to assume it would permanently keep the same shape

Certain writers (*cough* NYT Opinion *cough*) overread the durability of illiberal nationalism and scoffed at pro-democracy appeals, but they only listened to each other, never allowing alternate opinions into their elite bubble. That left them unable to grasp everything from Hungary to Minneapolis.
