Really disappointed to see that this year's NSF GRFP solicitation excludes second-year grad students (this late in the application cycle too!)
I'm a previous recipient and applied in my second year because I did rotations during my first year. This unfairly penalizes rotation students.

My latest byline over at Penn State News. In a time of research funding cuts and the uncertain future of science, it's really meaningful to work with these outstanding students and do all we can to prepare them for careers outside of academia.
🎉 We’re launching BIOMS! The One Health Microbiome Center just received a $2.6M NIH T32 grant to train the next generation of microbiome scientists across human, environmental, and agricultural microbiome research.

Proud to see Penn State ranked 24th in the U.S. and 82nd globally in the 2026 QS rankings — with a special mention for the One Health Microbiome Center!
A great moment for microbiome science & interdisciplinary research.

Excited to announce that I've started a new role as a Research Project Manager at @psumbiome.bsky.social! I am thrilled to be working with a fantastic team to support the great microbiome research going on here at the Center!
Big news for the #microbiome research community! A new paper outlines the next chapter for microbiome data standards beyond human studies and into environmental & non-human research. Excited to share that OHMC's Dr. Sarah Bordenstein was part of this collaborative effort!

Tomorrow is #InternationalWomensDay. As we celebrate, we also acknowledge that there are still areas of gender inequality, including healthcare. The first step in addressing this is talking about it.
If we can’t talk openly about women’s health, we can’t advance women’s health.

More baking pics! This weekend I took a class at the local community education center on cupcake decorating 🥰 really happy with how these turned out and I learned so much about piping and buttercream!
My first month as a postdoc I ordered 20L of paraformaldehyde... I meant to order 500ml. Not sure how I messed that up but the lab will have paraformaldehyde in stock for YEARS 😂

I realize I post more baking content than science content....but I hope no one minds 😁

There are two fatal cases of H5N1 in cats in California. Both cats had been fed raw milk from the recalled lot in the ongoing outbreak associated with Raw Farms. The milk wasn’t tested. But an astute veterinarian tested the cats for flu based on clinical suspicion.

6 months ago I started my sticker of the month club, where I send people a gut microbiome themed sticker each month. I didn’t expect anyone to actually subscribe to it, but 20 people have so far 🥲 so grateful for each and every one them.
Sending out the December drop tomorrow! 💌

Some fun facts...I have a cat named Baby. I like to dress up and document my outfits. I'm an amateur naturalist with an interest in fungi. This year I took up knitting and have been working on the same sweater for 8 months. I bake frequently and have played 2 level 1-20 D&D campaigns.
