I haven’t printed in darkrooms since 2006. I switched to digital pigment printing once the technology improved. I was able to more accurately get the tonal quality I sought with gelatin prints but rarely achieved. I have a high-end scanner to do my negs and then do minimal manipulations in Photoshop
After nearly 20 years of non-use, I’ve decided it’s time to pass on my original Beseler Enlarger. This isn't just a piece of darkroom equipment; it is the ONLY enlarger I’ve used throughout my entire career. From my early days in Chicago to my later work in Los Angeles, every one of my classic black-and-white images was printed on this enlarger. It's now sitting in a friend's garage looking for a new forever home. I bought it when I was 16 with savings from my first job working in a hospital kitchen in St. Louis. It has moved across the country with me and served as the foundation of my darkroom for decades. Condition & Provenance The aesthetic is "well-loved". It shows some rust and wear consistent with a lifetime of passionate artistic use, but the soul of the machine is intact. Tested: The up-and-down motor still works beautifully (see video). Head: Standard Black & White head (no color head included). Lens: Includes a crisp Nikon NIKKOR 75mm 1:4 enlarging lens. Accessories Included are the exact tools I used to create my signature look: Custom 35mm Negative Holder: Interior edges have been sanded/expanded to allow for printing the full negative frame (black borders) around images. Modified 4x5 Negative Holder: Features a custom homemade cardboard housing for my medium format negatives in the 6:4.5 ratio. It’s a DIY solution that produced all my professional B&W prints. Easels: One 11x14 and one 8x10 enlarging easel. Filters: Full set of Ilford Multigrade filters. Dimensions & Logistics Base: 25.5" W x 31" D Height: 45.5" (Stored), significantly higher when the head is fully raised. Location: Local Pick-up Only in West Los Angeles. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of functional history that has been a part of my artistic journey since the very beginning. Prior to shooting for my friend Molly’s latex line So Hip It Hurts in the mid ‘90s, I was shooting exclusively black and white. Since I developed and printed my own prints (pre-digital), black and white always made the most sense for me - plus, it was always my preferred aesthetic choice. So, thanks to Molly for forcing me to expand my visual palette! Anyway, as I’ve written about this shoot many times before, this was the shoot that introduced me to both Midori and Kumi. It was a guerrilla-style shoot in San Francisco’s Chinatown. I shot mostly black and white and only shot color for Molly’s purposes. But with this shoot, I realized that color could indeed be part of my artistic output. One other color shot from this shoot would make the cover of my first book just a few years later in 1998, The Beauty of Fetish (Edition Stemmle). The book cover was a happy accident. While Kumi was adjusting her stockings, I was doing an in-camera light reading and accidentally took a photo. I remember a time, at least in my experiences, that people in backseats didn’t wear seatbelts as much as front passengers. Perhaps it felt safer back there with a smaller chance of flying through the front windshield?

I think she was on the scene about 5 years before we worked together. I didn't get to shoot her until after I moved to LA in 1998.
