It's Shirley Jackson's birthday today, and so it's a perfect opportunity to recommend my favourite story of hers, THE SUMMER PEOPLE. It's a subtle horror, quietly creeping up behind you until it lays a cold hand on your shoulder. I love it very much. It's only 13 pages and you can read it here:
