I am struggling with what might be a generational experience. The gulf war was pretty politically formative for me. It’s not history so much as memory this time.
It is destabilizing to see almost the exact same gameplan but this time without the guardrails that at the time I took for granted.

It was also a packed crowd of young Black, queer, and trans people in a very traditional room of the São Paulo city council on a Friday night
The event had a long table of speakers and there was a big emphasis on bringing all communities along. The table included City Council rep Amanda Paschual and State rep Carolina Iara, as well as the legendary Neon Cunha
I went to a political rally of Black trans politicians in São Paulo, led by Deputada Erika Hilton, and it was a master class in transforming political space. It started with ballroom:
