What happens when a leader with nothing to lose is confronted by one who has everything to lose?
Pres. Trump's comment on Robert Mueller's death ("Good, I'm glad he's dead.") reminded one of Pete Hegseth's recent plea from the Pentagon for Christian prayers to protect U.S. troops and secure a swift victory over Iran. And reminded one of those cute little golden crosses adorning the Administration's WH and cabinet female cadre. No doubt that these folks pray: For SUCCESS, MONEY, VICTORY OVER ENEMIES FOREIGN and DOMESTIC, THEIR CHILDREN, THEIR TEAM. Maybe even spare a prayer or two for those less fortunate. It doesn't cost anything. But something else is at work here: Much of what is being done in the name of (or at least with a coy wink to) Judeo-Christianity is to blunt the fact that the teachings of Christ pose chapter-and-verse an existential threat to the we-are-the-only-true-Americans, greed, grifting, self-dealing and cruelty that distinguishes this administration from all others. Co-oping the symbols of a potentially powerful moral adversary is an ancient and often successful strategy. They better pray it works this time too.
