Great author meets critics session on my book ‘Crime and Civilization’ in the annual conference of the American Society of Criminology (Washington DC, Nov 12-15). Good discussions by a great line-up of critics: @shaddmaruna.bsky.social @marcelo-f-aebi.bsky.social and Brendan Dooley. Thanks!
In France (1960–2019), simple correlations look convincing; cointegration/ECM say otherwise (no long-run effect; GDP cointegrates but no dynamic impact).
We revisited 70 years of research on whether downturns raise imprisonment. Finding: methods matter—a lot. If theories are mediated/complex, our analytics must be time-series-aware.
New article in Punishment & Society with M.M. Tiago: reviewing 47 studies, we show how method choice can bias the economy→imprisonment link. Non–time-series methods report significance 82% of the time vs 68% for proper time-series tools. Open Access thanks to@unil.bsky.social doi.org/10.1177/1462...

There must be a special place in Dante's hell for academics that sign useless petitions and feel good about themselves
If you care a serious issue (e.g war, genocide) do something real which usually involve some cost to you; otherwise you are just being ridiculous
