''Just a wonderful analogy of what it feels like to be a neurodivergent person...''

What a cracking set of voxpops for A Small Enclosed Room with Alfie Murphy - a beautifully chaotic dive into neurodivergence

I know coverage of disability benefits can be very distressing. So, I’ve worked with colleagues to make a range of support visible on The Guardian’s site.

If you click on a relevant news story, you’ll see a “drop box” of signposted mental health help as well as benefits advice.

Spent my daytime with some brilliant organisations talking inclusion and co-leadership. Spent my evening with my students dreaming up ideas for learning disabled and autistic-led television shows. I’m happy but also my brain is absolutely done.

Feeling enriched and inspired by a day at @graeaetheatre.bsky.social’s new writing festival. Also maybe, for the first time in ages, a **tiny** bit hopeful about theatre…?

Wonderful colleague pointed out today that in our jobs (and lives) we are pretty much always walking into a room where we’re wanted.

I can’t stop thinking about it. What a privilege.

Had a couple of drinks this evening and spent the long journey home swaying tipsily on the train.

Some people in my position would text an ex. Make a crazy purchase. Do something wild.

I paid for a podcast subscription so I didn’t have to wait for the next episode.

RECKLESS.

Screenshot of a Guardian article, reading: "Drama schools have been particularly hard hit by the previous government’s decision to cut funding for arts subjects to prioritise Stem subjects, which fall within the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Top-up funding for creative and performing arts courses, which are expensive to run, was frozen at £16.7m in 2024-25, resulting in a real-terms cut due to inflation. In 2020-21 the grant was worth £36m, before it was cut nearly in half by Gavin Williamson, the then education secretary.

Nick Hillman, the director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, said although many of the affected smaller specialist institutions were world leading, a high proportion were struggling.

Courses are expensive to deliver because of a high student-to-staff ratio and they lack the economies of scale enjoyed by larger institutions. “It risks becoming a national catastrophe for these institutions that specialise in areas where the UK is traditionally top notch,” Hillman said."

The absurd idea that the arts (or anything for that matter) should somehow be cheap, profitable, and still world-leading at every stage from primary school to post-grad still seems to have a stranglehold on policy-makers despite the damage we're seeing daily
