My theory is that it's a version of induced delusion, and there the consensus seems to be that previous problems are a precondition for its development.

Many of the pieces I saw say something like "no previous mental health problems" to then mention previous use of anxiety medication or drug use. So, yeah.
Currently, there are no studies at all about this stuff, only case reports of people with preexisting mental health issues.

While I agree, an idol is set as the paragon of all the values the group espouses (cf Trump); the case here is purely descriptive/amoral. Let’s imagine that Lee was such a poor tactician that the south had won if not for him. The reasons are compelling by the group‘s standards, but see above.
