When bats are first emerging from a roost and are the most compacted, the adjustment of hearing thousands of calls and losing your own as you try to navigate out of the swarm is referred to as a βcocktail party nightmareβ by academics π
If you want extrapolation on any of these facts lemme know and Iβll be happy to yap because the character limit is so restrictive
-create currents of traffic, matching speed to create a predictable flow.
However, during the hunt some species will purposefully βjamβ other frequencies they hear bats emitting to throw them off prey and give them a better chance to catch whatever theyβre trying to feast on.
Bats that live in large colonies swarm out of their roost into the night in large clouds. (Cloud=group of bats) and sometimes bump into each other. However, they have rules to prevent traffic jams. Shorter and softer echolocation calls for proximity locating, following a bat in front of them to-
Yes, bats migrate! Many species hibernate through the winter, while others migrate to warmer climates for winter. Mex. free-tailed bats travel ~1000 miles from the Southwest US down into Mexico, while the farthest migrating bat: Nathusiusβ Pipistrelle goes 1500 miles from Russia to the French alps
OH YOU THOUGHT I WAS DONE? 1 like for every fact so hereβs another!
Bats can reach incredible speeds during flight, with the top confirmed record being 99.5 mph! Thatβs faster than a cheetah 0: this record is held by the Mexican Freetailed bat, who are juggernaut migrators

Here's a few detail shots of Jace π₯°
It warms our hearts to see so much love for this guy π
We would love to make more raccoons in the future, and are currently estimating that our next opening will be some time this summer!

Most of the time though, for colonies of bats, pups are left at home and cared for by designated babysitters who switch off. When mom comes home she can identify her baby by smell and the sound of babyβs squeaks π₯Ί
Bats being mammals give birth to live babies who are naked and blind. Mommas can carry them as they fly, even though the babies are about 1/3 of their body weight! Babies hold onto momβs body fur with their claws, and latch onto her nipple which is in the armpit- another amazing adaptation
Speaking of great adaptations, there are 2 species of bat in Madagascar that have evolved sucker-like pads on their wrists and ankles that help them perch on foliage!
These guys have actually made a huge comeback thanks to awareness and environmental efforts~
Greater mouse tail bats have evolved a unique way to get around pitch black caves. Many species of bat will climb backwards up cave walls or roost areas, but that makes using your nose a bit tricky! This bat sweeps its tail back and forth to navigate, sensing differences in height as small as .5 cm!
Because if a vampire bat doesnβt eat for over 48 hours, they risk dying.
Vampires donβt suck but rather make a small incision in their prey and lap up the Bloo. Theyβve evolved modified genetics to process the high iron diet- bats in general are amazing adaptors!
Also they can run π
Vampires deserve love! Thereβs only 3 species and they all live in central + South America. They have close bonds with other bats, creating close friendships that develop special dialects! They share food with each other if one at didnβt get to eat by regurgitating blood for one another by kissing-
Bats eat a variety of things! Most are insectivorous (bug eaters), but bat diets can range from fruit to nectar, from fish to small animals (lizards, mice, even other bats π¨), and yesβ¦. Blood!π§ββοΈπ©Έ
πΈ: bulldog bat (fish), pallid bat (bugs like scorpions!), vampire bat (blood), fox bat (fruit)
There are over 1400 identified species of bats, and they vary widely in morphology andβ¦. Coloration!
From spots to stripes to vibrant colors, these critters are breathtaking to see.
Pictured: Spotted bat, pied butterfly bat, painted wooly bat, and ghost bat
Bats are estimated to make up a whopping 20% of all mammals! Thatβs 1 in 5! π€―
Some bats are solitary, but most roost in groups anywhere from a handful to MILLIONS strong. Bracken Cave in Texas is the largest concentration of mammals on earth at ~15 million+ bats!

Did you wake up to empty trash bins this morning? That might be because there's a new racoon in town!
Everyone, meet Jace!
