“'I’d always thought music was too formal,' Don Van Vliet told one US critic in 1973. 'So I thought, ‘I’ll get into this and fix it.'”

there is a Little Golden Books biography of Prince
our library has it
I don't think trans people should wish they were never born or think it's better off if they didn't exist either. I don't think that about them.

another obstacle for early Prince for me was my longstanding dislike of 80s recording tones. i've softened on this but they're still not my favorites. personal evolution & decent remasters have helped me to hear the music through the sound 🤷♀️
——he'd have got into something else.
3rd Eye Girl seems like the beginning of that something else... Now he had a Real Rock Band, so imagine taking them to—idk—Electrical Audio? Bad Animal? Granted it's tricky for a Mega-Celeb to move around thus, so maybe the "consistency" was partly trappedness.
... I would LOVE to have heard him go on to experiment (& I find it hard to believe he would not have done) with different studios & sounds. I figure he was in a place of being able to churn out product as he pleased, while making most of his income from touring, & eventually——
... but for whatever reason—and partly, I'm sure, BECAUSE of that sonic quality & consistency—late Prince is what sucked me in first—say from Rainbow Children on out, that's the stuff I listen to most.
You can tell from FOR YOU that he was after a pristine clarity, so why should I begrudge it?
interesting how QL has trouble with 💜's later music because it *sounded too good*—which he attributes to, too few obstacles to over come? no limitations? so less interesting sonics?
I hear the sterility he means, sometimes... I more hear a consistent workspace & flow, & so maybe a complacency?
... this list sorta makes the point that's been floating around in my head today...
that for me Prince's music is a bit like the Music Of The Future in Bill & Ted?* always playing, tap in anywhere & it'll be brilliant, suits any mood or occasion.
*(or the space dub in Neuromancer either)
do I take an edible & stay up all night listening to Questlove's favorite Prince songs

(no because I'd go crazy with inspiration I couldn't realize after like song 3)
** just noticed they have a warning in their bio:
"Some women featured may be bisexual"
hundred-percent the vibe
right?!?
especially after reading the bit in Before We Were Trans about fights over whether a given individually was to be historically preserved as Canonically Lesbian OR Canonically Gender-Weird, & the discomfort with the twain ever meeting on even the T-friendly L side ... I'm a little weirded out.
all I got for Madonna discourse is that one interview where someone asked her what she thought she'd be like as a gay man and she said: "I am a gay man."
Love her for that if for nothing else (& there's lots of other reasons!)
one of the "lesbian history" type accounts I follow on ig did a whole tirade about Protecting Lesbian Visibility Week From Being Taken Over By Anyone But Female Lesbians and I can't tell if they're just sensitive or like all the way icky... & how much time do I want to devote to figuring this out 🫠
changing out the tarot deck on the practice room altar... had Motherpeace there for a long while & I like it but we're not sure it works w/ the band vibe exactly... gonna try @yoshiyoshitani.bsky.social's Tarot Of The Divine.
(the Official Band Altar has @trashpandatarot.bsky.social of course!)
cheer every time he mentions Dian Fossey i don't make the rules
turned on David Attenborough Gorilla Movie Thing and every few minutes I retort to his pleasant reflective voiceover "just wait til you meet a bigfoot, David"
mmmmmmm noted!
soooo good
yeah you do 🤘😋
