Dublin currently has ZERO cycle lanes under construction.
You'd think the climate crisis, collapsing AMOC, fossil fuel supply crisis, obesity epidemic, traffic jams or appalling road death increases didn't exist.
No urgency. Just subsidies for ... yep... more fossil fuels 😞

Degrowth makes it to the @oireachtasnews.bsky.social thanks to Minister Jack Chambers!
Thanks very much for the hugely appreciated words of support Pádraic. We continue to stand united on our shared goal of ensuring clean, healthy waters for present and future generations.

10% of the worlds population own 75% of the wealth. Spinning the yarn that economic growth for the rich will (some day) trickledown and make everyone richer is either naive or wilfully disingenuous.
Earlier you were just talking about "people" becoming poorer and now its just "the rich". Saying the quiet bit out loud! Its called redistribution and it should come as no surprise that redistibution would make more people prosperous.

You obviosuly have not read anything! Growth is about spreading misery! Exploitation of humans and nature for the benefit of capital, climate change, war, ecological collapse, inequality, etc etc. Of course, from the perspective of the 'winners' it looks great. Misery of the majority is expendable
Post-growth planning/urbanisation. Its a theoretical thesis and certainly not for everyone or the faint-hearted! www.postgrowthcities.com
Because the ideology demands that nobody can be worse off to make some one better off! Pareto blah blah. Even Elon Musk cannot be made worse off. Hence the obsession with growth. If we just grow the pie we don't have to deal with the thorny issue of distrubution. Of course, this is a ruse.
Living standards would go up: universal basic services, free public healthcare, public transport, renewable energy. All of things which are denied to people - especially in the US with horrible consequences- because of the ideological hegemony of an austere neoliberal growth economy.
Don’t confuse abstruse mathemised models for facts! They are not the real world. Look around. Nordhaus told us that at a temperature rise somewhere between 2.7 and 3.5 degrees Celsius, the global economy reaches “optimal” adaptation!
There is a good explainer of what Degrowth is here: degrowth.info/degrowth
I think it speaks volumes about how successful the concept is in challenging the broad ideological neoclassical paradigm that they rather spread puerile falsehoods about it, rather than substantively engage.
You don't need to read my work. You just need to read (in good faith) the widely published work of scholars who write on the topics of degrowth, post-growth, ecological economics etc. They were writing about 'abundance' long before it became a trendy theme of the deregulatory right!
Yep. Who I am is irrelevant. Debate should be on substance and in good faith and not “just be honest and say you want people to poorer blah blah blah”. Why would you even say that if you did not want to be totally dismissive and debating in bad faith?
You know, likewise. I wrote my PhD on Degrowth and am familiar with all of the faux ideological misrepresentations of the concept.
I’m very familiar with your work - I’m Irish! - and the economic collapse was formative in my decision to question the poverty of the economic orthodoxy.
No, growth makes most people poorer and makes the wealthier even wealthier.
I want all people to be prosperous which the ideological ruse of GDP growth prevents them from being.
Just be honest and say you want rich people to be richer (and the poor be damned)
And btw I don’t see the current popularity of ‘Degrowth Donald’ as anything other than the usual tried and tested Degrowth = recession corruption of the term. The negative reaction to degrowth is ideological which precisely what the word is supposed to provoke.
All words are ultimately empty signifiers. In the US, socialism is liberalism, sustainability means growth, and a doughnut is a tasty food item. I use Degrowth as an analytic concept (wrote my PhD on the topic). The goal is post-growth.
That’s the whole point of using the word! It’s deliberate. It’s not supposed to give you warm and fluffy feelings like ‘sustainability’ which has totally been co-opted, corrupted and only serves to sustain the unsustainable.

Recessions are an unintentional (but necessary) feature of a capitalist growth economy. Recessions cannot occur in a Degrowth economy as it’s not a capitalist growth economy.
No, it means a planned shift to a post-growth world. We have two options: to downscale by design (preferred) or disaster.
