🚨New article🚨

What if the misguided construction of 'right-wing populism' has prevented us from holding the elite accountable and rejuvenate democracy?

The first paper of my dissertation is published now in @sociologyjnl.bsky.social!

Press coverage of the richest Germans is rare but focused on a minority of highly visible individuals and varies along the historical origins of fortunes.

I think a big part of that is fewer active users. Not sure how much is fragmentation across sites but also burnout/disenchantment with social media.

Then once this becomes a place more for political griping and less for intellectual exchange, the inertia continues

How We Miscategorize the Categorizers Marc Helbling & Alexander Kustov on Polarization, Immigration Attitudes, and Why the Pro/Anti Binary Fails

❓ "Are immigration attitudes as binary as we think?
❗ No — and treating them that way makes polarization worse, say MZES director Marc Helbling and @akoustov.bsky.social .
Even people labeled ‘anti-immigration’ hold nuanced, conditional views.

Acquiescence Bias and Criterion Validity: Problems and Potential Solutions for Agree-Disagree Scales - Political Behavior Political Behavior - Scholars frequently measure dispositions like populism, conspiracism, racism, and sexism by asking survey respondents whether they agree or disagree with statements...

New w/@scottclifford.bsky.social.

Lots of work uses agree-disagree scales, and a lit review shows these are 1) frequently just measured in one direction (agree = higher trait) and 2) correlated with each other.

This has potentially big issues for conclusions.

The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023.

The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets.

It sounds like he will be making his "Trump is right" case about civilisational erasure to the Greater Manchester constituency's voters
