In the map screen in Super Mario Sunshine, a Yellow Yoshi in the Pinna Park brochure is seen saying something nearly unreadable:
[screenshot of unreadable text]
However, trying to enhance the image suggests, using the evidence provided, that he is congratulating someone named Shinko:
Please accept my best wishes for your marriage, Shinko!
Shinko Konishi is a map designer who has worked at Nintendo since 2000. In 2001, she worked with programmer Yoshitaka Takeshita on Animal Crossing:
Field Design
Jun Takamura
Shinko Konishi
Program
Masaro Sakakibara
Makoto Sasaki
Nobuhiro Sumiyoshi
Yoshitaka Takeshita
Hiroshi Umemiya
In Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshitaka Takeshita was not involved, and her name was still Shinko Konishi:
MAP DESIGN
Hiromu Takemura
Atsushi Miyagi
Shinko Konishi
Taeko Sugawara
However, in Super Mario 64 DS, they work together again (in the same roles), and now Shinko's last name is Takeshita:
MAP & LEVEL
DESIGN
MINI-GAME PROGRAMMING
JUN TAKAMURA
SHINKO TAKESHITA
EIJI MUKAD
YUJI SAHATANI
YUKARI SUZUKI
YOSHITAKA TAKESHITA
EIJI NISHIKAWA
This all is extremely strong evidence that Shinko was engaged to Yoshitaka during the production of Super Mario Sunshine. As the Yoshi image would have been made by someone on the map design team, they would have worked closely with Shinko and used this opportunity to congratulate her.

In Super Mario Sunshine, the Pinna Park map screen brochure features a Yoshi saying something nearly indecipherable. However, it turns out there is compelling evidence that he is congratulating a map designer on her upcoming wedding to a programmer at Nintendo.

The Super Mario World theme is inspired by the 1963 song "Green Green". Nintendo planned a cheeky reference to this on the Satellaview by playing Green Green with the SMW soundfont, but this went unused, possibly due to the legal consequences of acknowledging the inspiration.

In a 1993 issue of Famitsu, the magazine reached out to Nintendo Japan to answer questions related
to Mario for the release of Super Mario All-Stars. One of them was about "Mario's favorite foods":
「マリオはキノコが好物なのはもちろんのこと、タマネギやピーマン、食用ギクなども好きなんですよ」(任天堂)
"Mario loves mushrooms, of
course, but he also likes onions,
bell peppers, and edible
chrysanthemums" (Nintendo)

In 1993, the Japanese Famitsu magazine inquired Nintendo about Mario's favorite foods. Nintendo replied that Mario's favorite foods are mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and surprisingly, edible chrysanthemums.

In Super Mario 64 DS, giant characters normally cannot crawl. However, reading a sign pounded halfway into the ground forces the character into a crawling pose. When giant, this results in the character's giant posterior completely blocking the entire screen.

In the spirit of April Fools' Day but without sacrificing the Supper Mario Broth veracity policy, here is a fact that seems so outlandish as to be a joke, but is actually true: in 1993, a Sega ad campaign briefly planned to use profanity to slander Mario.

[picture of a regular Thwomp]
Thwomp as he appears in Super Mario Galaxy
[picture of a Thwomp with no eyes and four eyes where his mouth should be]
Thwomp as he would appear if his face texture was applied as-is instead of being partially mapped to different places
Please note that UV mapping, the practice of applying textures to a model via coordinate projection, often results in scrambled and misplaced parts in the image. The fact that the texture is different from the finished model after projection is not itself notable. I am merely pointing out the unintentionally unsettling imagery resulting from placing the eyes into the mouth but having an otherwise intact face in this instance.
[Mario texture with no eyes]
A typical Mario texture (from Super Mario Party). Mario's eyes not being in their eye sockets is normal. If they were inside his mouth, however, it would be notable.

To save space, the eyes on the Thwomp's face texture in Super Mario Galaxy are, in a manner both inventive and disconcerting, stored inside his mouth.

In Mario Kart Wii, crashing the game and activating the crash handler will eventually start playing back the contents of the Wii's RAM as sound. Since the data was never intended to be interpreted like this, it ends up sounding like experimental harsh noise music.

[screenshot of a boat in New Super Mario Bros. Wii]
NICE_BOAT
In World 6-6 of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a boat with a tilt-controlled spotlight appears. Internally, this object is called "NICE_BOAT". While this may simply mean the programmers thought it was a particularly nice boat, there is reason to assume it is related to the September 2007 "Nice Boat" broadcast incident.
[screenshot of a TV broadcast showing live-action footage of a boat]
The "Nice Boat" incident
In 2007, the anime School Days was aired in Japan. The day before the final episode, which would have featured a girl committing a violent murder, a similar murder took place in real life (16-year-old girl murdered her father with an axe in Kyoto). The episode was cancelled and stock footage was played for 30 minutes in its place, featuring a boat.
The boat, alongside a comment on an imageboard calling it a "nice boat", became a meme in Japan after the incident. Due to NSMBW releasing in 2009, it would have been in development at the time and it stands to reason that the developers could have been referencing the meme.

A boat in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is called "NICE_BOAT" internally. While the developers may have simply believed it to be a particularly nice boat, there is reason to assume this is a reference to the "Nice Boat" broadcast incident where an anime episode was cancelled due to a murder.

The 1998 official site for Nintendo Australia had a deliberately silly aesthetic with small animations and edits to official renders. For the "HELP" button, Yoshi's pupils were made smaller than usual to give him a "concerned" expression, as though in need of help.

i think i might be giving her more power with the way I'm talking about her all the time, but, i can't help it
she is making me lose my mind and i have nobody left to talk about this to
After a long period of time, Bowbear's reference (for 2026) has finally been made.
I unironically enjoyed making this reference sheet ngl, I can't wait to so much more with this character... or perhaps, maybe I can? I honestly don't know.

AND HIDING IT FROM ME AGAIN, HAVEN'T YOU?"
Panel 2:
Luigi: "SORRY, BRO...
I JUST COULDN'T RESIST..."
Panel 3:
Mario: "I'M NOT SAYING EATING MUSHROOMS IS A BAD THING!
JUST DON'T DO IT SECRETLY IN THE TOILET!"
Panel 4:
Zoom out to reveal Luigi is too large to exit the toilet. Mario must go urgently.
Luigi: "I'M SORRY, BRO... I'M SORRY..."
Mario: "IT'S ALRIGHT, JUST GET OUT OF THERE!"
Please note that the original comic was already in Western left-to-right reading order. The panels are specifically numbered in the comers to indicate the correct order to readers only familiar with Japanese manga right-to-left order.

"Mushrooms are drugs" jokes are a staple of Mario humor on the Internet. Not even Nintendo themselves are strangers to this, with a comic in the official Japanese Super Mario World guide using "Luigi is consuming mushrooms secretly in the bathroom" as a setup.
