We’re in the truly weird position where McSweeney had to go for giving the PM the advice to appoint Mandelson and Robbins had to go for not stopping him.

pete hegseth is so bad at his job that we're like one tick away from the gray zone being like "actually, pete hegseth is good, because he effectively stands against american imperialism"

there’s been a trend of politicians going ‘grrr, I’m going to swear because I’m so damn angry’ over the past year or so. It doesn’t work at all though when you’re the sort of politician who dresses up as a Nazi officer to visit a detention centre

Interesting to note an instance of a British Muslim woman wanting to do violence to a Jewish person and declaring them not to be British that garners no uproar from outlets and pundits that are usually at a fever pitch about antisemitism.

Yet this isn't even declared a trope.

Mad fact... 42% of Labour Prime Ministers have had to fire Peter Mandelson.

everywhere you look, they’re adding rate limits and raising the price per token. it’s almost as if the bill is coming due and they can’t keep throwing money at making something happen that isn’t happening.

The *entire Starmer project* needs to be understood as one big Jobs For The Boys operation. That’s why McSweeney - Labour’s squillionaire bungs officer - spent 2017-19 running around telling dejected MPs to hold tight, because he was going to hook them back up with their clout, status and freebies.

oh hang on, 4 fronts - that someone in no 10 was angling for a head of mission, ie diplomat, job Matthew Doyle (head of comms sacked by PM, v much not a career diplomat, bonkers idea ) which suggests they saw diplomatic service as somewhere you could park people you sort of owed one.

I would look at the astonishingly long list of MPs and officials who suicide bombed their own careers to tank their party and put these swine back in the top jobs, and were rewarded for it with peerages and other non-jobs for life or e.g. ambassadorships, and start putting two and two together.

That awkward moment when the guy you decide is going to take the fall turns out to be a basically competent human being who can accurately describe what happened and your whole Machiavellian plan falls apart.

The thing about all this Mandelson stuff is that actually dealing with it would require basically disestablishing at least 3 major political parties, banning their members from politics, jailing a lot of people and shutting down at least 4 national newspapers. Don't really see that happening soon.

look, if you ruled out every potential candidate for high office in Britain just because they had friendships with sex offenders, there wouldn't be anyone left

Prime minimiser Keir Starmer of the UK acknowledged yhat 'he exercised wring judgement' when he chose his ambassador to Washington. I agree he was a really bad pick. Plenty of time to recover, however! President DJT

Its a really funny subplot that this was all because Trump was apparently the Trump Whisperer despite the fact he quite clearly doesn't like him.

Olly Robbins' bombshell evidence so far:

* The Cabinet Office suggested there was no need to vet Mandelson *at all*

* No 10 applied 'constant pressure' on Mandelson to approve Mandelson's appointment and took a 'dismissive' attitude to vetting

* Mandelson was given access to the FCDO building, to low classification IT and to 'higher classification briefings' before he was granted security clearance

* No 10 showed **no interest** in the actual vetting. The entire focus was on getting Mandelson to Washington as quickly as possible

We can joke about Dorries being in favour of T here, but this, too, is rubbing it in people's faces. Cis people can have all the hormonal gender affirming care they want.

The currently escalating tech backlash must be put in the context of:

“people have been listening to the most insufferable techbros in the world gleefully threaten everyone else with mass unemployment for over 6 years, and they’re sick of their shit”
