New year, even more incredible snapshots of science & nature from CIRES employees!

In 2016, CIRES and @nsidc.bsky.social's @drtwilamoon.bsky.social captured this photo after the successful installation of 3 time-lapse cameras to observe the LeConte Glacier & fjord in Alaska.

Climate Deniers of the 119th Congress and the Second Trump Administration A new CAP analysis finds that the federal government is rife with officials who deny climate change in leadership positions within the executive branch, presidential Cabinet, and Congress.

Reminder of recent report suggesting that as much as 22% of US congressional members do not accept the scientific reality of human-caused climate change. This is not how we lead for a better future. How will we change this?

It’s the gold standard of US climate research. Contrarians could write the next one. Researchers who have downplayed the threat of global warming have been asked to author the next National Climate Assessment.

E&E News @politico.com reporting that Trump has asked DOE climate deniers to write the next US National Climate Assessment. Prepare for false information and cherry-picked numbers that WILL NOT help to save lives, save money, or reduce risks.

How Soon Will the Seas Rise? | Quanta Magazine The uniquely vulnerable West Antarctic Ice Sheet holds enough water to raise global sea levels by 5 meters. But when that will happen — and how fast — is anything but settled.

There are many uncertainties in this article except this one: "Worldwide, some 230 million people live less than a meter above sea level, and 1 billion people are within 10 meters of sea level." www.quantamagazine.org/how-soon-wil...

The US East Coast - one of the places that ice lost from Greenland ends up. Counterintuitively, places far from where land ice is lost are most impacted by the resulting sea level rise.

The drumbeat remains - mitigation + adaptation.

For Winter: Mount Logan for National Geographic | Steve Andrews A film documenting a record-breaking ice core sample from the summit plateau of Mount Logan. I was the sound mixer on this expedition in May 2022.

I think this might be as close as you can get to a taste of what For Winter was. It was such a fantastic film!

Typhoon leaves flooded Alaska villages facing a storm recovery far tougher than most Americans will ever experience ‘As the storm approached Alaska, everything went sideways,’ leaving people no time to evacuate and little time to prepare. An Alaska meteorologist explains what happened and the challenges ahead.

When floodwaters hit remote Alaska villages, recovery isn’t as simple as fixing up a home in the Lower 48.

No roads. No hardware stores. Winter closing in.

Families are facing impossible choices after Typhoon #Halong.
