It's even more obvious in Top Gun: Maverick, where the story literally boils down to "Old has-been is brought back to coach the team of newbies to win the big game".

Of course, spiritually turning war into sport comes with its own thematic baggage, but I do feel that's one of the key appeals.

My personal theory is that Top Gun is, at its core, closer to a sports movie than a war movie. So stuff like the tension between individual rivalries and teamwork, the cocky rebel/consummate pro duality, and all the horniness that comes with it, they all have the DNA of a sports story.
