This thread is mostly autistic rambling, but one last thing I wanted to share is a couple of charts with our current information - known media vs. new artwork per year, and known media vs. digital media (paintings and 3d renders). Having this information in one place makes it easier to ...
We kind of have to trust the people reselling purchased artwork on Facebook about if that painting is acrylics or oils, and sometimes artists have been personally contacted in cases where it was likely but not verifiable that *all* of their artwork used one medium (e.g. Daarken or Xabi Gaztelua).
Art media not being immediately observable in the artwork also raises the issue of verifiability. Our current standard for applying media tags is if you find it online, you can tag it. Most artists never make this information available, so we need a lot of leeway in what counts as a valid source.
The tag is obviously woefully incomplete, covering only around 14% of the art on Scryfall, but it's been a joy watching it go from 3k to 7k taggings over the course of the last 6 months.
This information is usually tucked away in social media, artist websites, ArtStation profiles or, in the case of traditional Magic artwork, the MTG Art Market Facebook group, which has been critical for sets like ECL (all of these are also pretty hard to comb through).
And my favorite of all: art media (tagger.scryfall.com/tags/artwork...)
This is imo the info that's hardest to find about any given artwork, and being able to gather it all (or as much as possible) in a single place is probably as helpful as Magic trivia and minutia go.

One fantastic use case for art tags is logging meta information about artwork, like:
- Artwork only available on digital prints: tagger.scryfall.com/tags/artwork...
- Booster key art: tagger.scryfall.com/tags/artwork...

Tagger is wonderful in how it allows Magic players to search for card categories and characteristics that would normally be incredibly difficult or straight up impossible to find in one quick query.
