I'm watching the Jimmy Savile documentary on Netflix and it's remarkable how much it's actually about how Thatcherism hollowed out public institutions such as hospitals so that they came to rely on the largesse of private entrepreneurs who, now being indispensable, were able to act with impunity

Trump shuts down the investigation into his own 'assassination' attempt. #MAGA why would he do that? Think hard on that, I'll wait.🤔
one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus
This 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 we are aware of….
The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”
The thing with Gen X and music is that yes we had grunge but we also had rock and funk and hip hop and rap and pop and house and trance and lounge and reggae and soul and Gregorian chants ffs.
CNN put together a montage of Trump saying as far back as March 9 that his war against Iran "is going to be finished pretty quickly," then him saying that same thing over and over for the past six weeks
“His ideas and what he built are so ubiquitous now," a former Infowars employee explains. "It’s been in the White House for two terms. You have all these young people picking up the torch. It’s getting far worse. The damage is done.”

Well, at least the BBC is covering this.
HERACLITOS. ASÀROTOS ÒIKOS MOSAIC, DETAIL, C. 125 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS This famous mosaic is signed by one Heraclitos, who may have copied the "unswept floor" mosaic by Sosos of Pergamon in the C2 CE, but as a border to a large and mainly vanished central scene with Egyptian and Nilotic details. Mosaic representations of pharaonic statues were set at the corners, and along the edge are lively riverside scenes like this duck which is peering into a curved lilypad leaf to see if a delicious frog or insect is hiding there. The duck's form is beautifully modelled in light and shadow, and the border of the mosaic at bottom is a wonderful undulating wave.
The splendid Asàrotos òikos #mosaic at the #VaticanMuseums is a #Hadrianic copy of a mosaic described by #Pliny the Elder at #Pergamon. Here, instead of looking at the famous "unswept floor" border, for #MosaicMonday we're looking at part of the #Nilotic mosaic it surrounded. #AncientBluesky 🏺
Mosaic of a rate biting the leg of a Roman boy. Red blood streams from the boy’s leg. Around are many leaves on an off-white background.

This is just so cool. A Roman-era mummy recently excavated in Egypt contained a fragment of papyrus with a section of the Iliad.
Josh Rogin: “Somebody shorted the oil market today by hundreds of millions of dollars exactly 20 minutes before Trump made his announcement—
If you see that once, it could be a coincidence. But that's happened at least three times, if not more, since the war began — that's a pattern”
If you go back and watch a movie like All the Presidents's Men, it will really hit you how massively our country has changed in my lifetime. It was unthinkable for any of today's headlines to ever even exist back then.
A lot of you think it's always been this bad, but it hasn't. It really hasn't.
Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court finds that abortion access is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Pennsylvania Constitution, and a ban on public funding for abortion is unconstitutional.

"The news published by the US is part of their propaganda campaign and a 'blame game' aimed at pressuring Iran."
Governor Tim Walz — "We are sick of this. A weak, reckless, Idiotic president just threw us into a war nobody asked for. No threat existed. No objectives were set. No exit plan exists. This is pure fascism." #cdnpoli

BREAKING: Iran’s Ghalibaf:
The President of the United States made seven claims in one hour, all seven of which were false.
They did not win the war with these lies, and they will certainly not get anywhere in negotiations either.
The concerns I expressed about unanswered questions proved to be unfortunately prophetic.
This week gave us yet another example of the pattern of good news while markets are open, followed by the real news coming as soon as they're closed.
More of this, less of bombing other countries
(From @acyn.bsky.social )
There was a time when the president inspired pride instead of exhaustion. I miss that more than I can say.
Thank you for your courage to publicly address abusive language.
