I'd add that for many of us libs / lefties (myself included) we set out at some point in our lives to "help the less fortunate". There's an additional element of self-preservation here: what if the chucklefucks weren't really worth saving?

it’s so funny that the drunk tv host in charge of the military is like “real warriors don’t need vaccines” when all the greatest generals in history would have done anything for a jab that kept their armies safe from disease
... in a slightly less shitty era it was comforting to know that hard work and competence at least bought you the opportunity to log in tomorrow and collect a check next week. Now? Pay me as much cash money up front as I can get and move on as soon as someone will pay me more.
... work" lands with a dull thud. Why should I be loyal to this company when they've already demonstrated that they'll get rid of good people with no real reason beyond juicing the bottom line?
Look ... we're all mercenaries on some level and we're kidding ourselves to think otherwise. But
... killer. You watch people who were solid employees get let go for seemingly random reasons and you think both "what's the point of trying" and "when is it my turn".
Even in an era where the e idea of corporations being loyal to employees any company messaging around "the team" or "hard
... get let go for no discernible reason. Doesn't matter if you were a top or bottom performer, what your organizational level was, etc. In goes a set of criteria and out comes the cut list.
It sucks for those impacted, for sure. But even for the people who are left it's a huge morale
I'd like to have a few words with whoever came up with the idea of the "algorithmic" layoff.
What is an algorithmic layoff? Basically the idea is to remove any hint of bias from a large layoff so as to avoid litigation. So far so good? I guess.
In practice what happens is a bunch of people
Napoleon says hi.
I'm old enough to remember the spate of Chinese companies - including an industrial conglomerate and a poultry firm - buying mobile games. They rebranded as game companies and their valuations instantly went from 2-3x revenues to 20x+.
Visiting Spain and it's absolutely wild to me that this place that was considered an LDC 32 years ago when I came here as a student is now so modern and wealthy.
My home country, meanwhile, is going in the opposite direction as fast as it can.
To the extent that Just War meant a blessing of some sort, it was applied post facto - you won, therefore you must've been blessed. Since we've kinda lost this one ... make of that what you will.
Except in the most corrupt minds it's never been about God's blessing. I beg these SOBs to read like one book that doesn't have pictures.
GOP leadership talking about "Just War" doctrine as if it was something from the 16th century. JFC ... first it was a set of rules so that combatants wouldn't run too afoul of grace. Then it became a philosophy to guide when it's okay to fight.
Huge "For All Mankind" fan. But man is S5 bad. This series went from epic space adventure with compelling alternate history to one-note CSI in space. The heavy-handed space cop could've been written by AI and they've basically leaned in to their weakest actor to carry the show.
I haven't lived in Michigan in over three decades and people still mock my accent. It's not as pronounced in Detroit as it is a bit further north ... think Saginaw area. And having lived in Minneapolis and as a frequent visitor to Chicago it's distinct from both of those.
Salt Lake City and it's not even close. It's like they took a suburban office park and put five lane roads through it every quarter mile for some reason. Apparently over a million people live there but I've been to towns of 5,000 people that feel more vibrant.
But we can do more pushups becuz we WARZFIghtrz grrrrrr!!!
It says something that the A.G. of the U.S. was fired for incompetence and it didn't even show up in my timeline for a day because said timeline was so choked with other bad and weird news.
The Dem brand is trash and has been for a while. I think that's mainly due to the ideological incoherence that comes from being a big tent party, plus the fecklessness that engenders in its leadership.
If he was a real man he'd just go mano a mano with a mullah to settle things.
Ah, yes. RetCon'ing a war. Makes sense for a bunch of TV stars and super fans that that's how they roll.
They're setting him up to take over for Trump in June '26 and ride in as the "moderating" influence to save the midterms.
Big believer in the value of learning cuneiform, myself. Never know when you're going to have to track the price of cows in the up-river markets.
Just agree to make him Grand Poobah of Dumbshitistan province and rename the Caspian the Trump Sea and the war's over.
The resistance?! I'm like 90%+ that she's directly working for Big Bad Vlad.
Also ... tiny little thing but the optics of removing M&Ms from the snacks while crowing about the stock price ain't great ... you could take like four fewer options and fund the snack budget for a year.
Hey, C-levels! You know what's better than platitudes about "hard work" and "together we'll make it through this"? Money! That's right ... you want me to work an extra 20 hours a week because you f***ed up the product strategy two years ago? Gimme some cash!
If she had any pride she'd rage quit like a sensible human but nah. She'll be flipping burgers on a Coast Guard cutter soon.
I mean, it's true that only liberals travel. Not like most of domestic first class is like contract welders and oil rig dudes or anything.
Pretty sure none of these numbnutz could name a single thing about him other than that he was in charge of the loser army.
Such a good general that he wasted his best troops in not one, not two, but three dumb charges in a battle he blundered into because rebel troops didn't have shoes.
