Carpenters - Yesterday Once More album cover.

"Karen Carpenter’s voice was so otherworldly, so perfect in tone and control, and, in my opinion, remains unmatched to this day for timbre and her ability to convey vast depths of sorrow."

Strawberry Switchblade - 10 James Orr Street
Strawberry Switchblade - 10 James Orr Street YouTube video by Strawberry Switchblade

Strawberry Switchblade's album was released on this day in 1985! In the era of vinyl, the album was 2 separate sides, side 1 opened with Since Yesterday & ended on 10 James Orr Street with Andrew Poppy's arresting epilogue demanding you sit quietly & let it resonate 🧵

I watched half of one episode of that old aziz ansari show when it came out and when I realized that "father john misty tickets" was a plot device you have never seen someone turn something off so fast

I sincerely wish that Queen Elizabeth II, the grossly over-revered Paedophile Protector In Chief had remained alive to endure the shame of this day, rather than the easier option she enjoys of rotting in oblivion.

Everything about this song is beautiful. The way the guitar swoons/wobbles in at the start, the droning bed, the trembling vocals, the constant drums. The way all the elements swirl around each other perfectly harmonious but not quite locked in. A dream of a song.

Found a load of old divs fawning over an AI clip claiming to show Margate in the early 1900s, endless comments about ‘times was great then’ and ‘what has are country become’ and couldn’t resist trying to get them to log off. Won’t work. We’re doomed.

painting on canvas of a bald man in a yellow shirt throwing a pinecone at ET's head. a group of people also wielding pinecones are gathered behind him, becoming more shadowy and inhuman the further back they are. the sky is a sickly yellow colour, taking place at an unclear time of day

I spent ages looking under the “ambient Americana” genre tag on rym but apparently this doesn’t count, in spite of it being both quasi-ambient and having a pedal steel player on it

God, thank you, I was trying to remember what this was called the other day and somehow “shrunken elvis” managed to slip my mind entirely?!?

Screenshot of Microsoft asking for feedback on Word where I wrote: One of the worst times I had this year was spending DAYS trying to turn off that horrible, awful AI, copilot. I am a writer, I have spent years honing my craft, and it is frankly offensive to offer to rewrite what I just wrote with a stupid machine. I almost stopped using Word until I FINALLY found a way to turn it off. I don't want to use AI and you still keep trying to ram it down my throat and I hate it.

Why yes, @microsoft.com, I will HAPPILY provide you feedback on how exactly I feel about Word right now.

Darran Anderson reflects on the work of the great Dennis Potter, an artist who saw the potential of television as medium, and a working class writer so "imaginative in the ways he defied containment"
